Rodri Explains Why He Picked Barcelona Over Real Madrid
Rodrigo Hernández, better known as Rodri, has officially become a Barcelona player after leaving Manchester City. The Ballon d'Or winner signed a deal that ties him to the Catalan club until 2030. During his unveiling, he spoke openly about why he chose Barcelona despite having other offers, including one from Real Madrid.
Barcelona Secures Rodri After Successful Manchester City Spell
Rodri completed his move after arriving in Barcelona, passing medical tests, and putting pen to paper on the long-term contract. His time at Manchester City saw him win 13 trophies, but now his focus shifts to helping Barcelona regain strength in La Liga and make deeper runs in European competitions under coach Hansi Flick.
Choosing Barcelona Over Real Madrid
Questions swirled around which club would land the midfielder, with Real Madrid being a major contender. Rodri confirmed that Madrid did make an offer but made clear that Barcelona was always his priority.
"I am very happy to be here. It is a special day, an important new chapter in my career. It was a hard decision," Rodri said. "Leaving City was tough because they gave me everything and I will always be grateful. But Barcelona have always been a global benchmark for me because of their football philosophy and values. I had another proposal, but Barca was my first choice and I told the board that."
Ready to Play and Excited About the Future
Rodri also addressed concerns about his fitness after recent back surgery, explaining it was a minor outpatient procedure and that he is ready to start playing straight away. He expressed excitement about playing alongside young talents like Lamine Yamal, praising the teenager's rapid development and impressive performances.
Regarding his new coach, Rodri appreciated Flick's bold tactical ideas and looks forward to bringing his experience to a youthful squad aiming to win the Champions League this season.
Upcoming Presentation and Debut
Rodri will begin training with his new teammates soon to adapt quickly. Barcelona's traditional Joan Gamper Trophy match against Egyptian club Al Ahly is set for tomorrow evening, where Rodri will be introduced to the fans at the Spotify Camp Nou ahead of the new domestic campaign.
