Rodri Stresses Solidity Over Flair for Barcelona's European Success

Rodri, the new midfield signing for Barcelona, shared his honest thoughts about the club’s prospects in the Champions League. The Spaniard highlighted that tactical discipline must come before stylish play if the team wants to end its long wait for European glory.

Balancing Ambition with Reality

After joining Barcelona from Manchester City this summer, where he won multiple Premier League titles and the club’s first Champions League in 2023, Rodri has quickly become central to coach Hansi Flick’s plans. Despite the excitement around him, Rodri remains grounded regarding the challenge ahead.

“Yes, I see the title as achievable. It’s that final step we need to take to prove ourselves in Europe,” he told Mundo Deportivo. “But I don’t think we’re the favourites yet. We have to recognize our past and what it takes to be champions. This team still needs to improve in many areas.”

The Need for Tactical Maturity

Having learned under Pep Guardiola, Rodri knows what it takes to win at the highest level. While Barcelona boast five European titles, they haven’t reached a final since 2015. Recent deep runs ended at the semi-finals in 2019 and 2025. He feels the squad has talent but lacks the experience to handle the unique pressure of knockout stages.

“The Champions League isn’t just about being the best; it’s about moments and knowing how to manage them,” Rodri said. “That’s the difference this team must find. If you ask me if we have a chance, that’s why I came here.”

Learning From Past Errors

Barcelona’s recent European campaigns have been hurt by defensive mistakes and lapses in concentration, like last season’s quarter-final loss to Atletico Madrid after a red card changed the dynamic. Rodri emphasized controlling those crucial moments is key to advancing.

“It’s about managing the decisive parts of ties—avoiding red cards, penalties, and limiting goals conceded,” he explained. “Sometimes being less attacking but more consistent and solid pays off more.”

Experience as a Teacher

Despite a strong start to the current season—winning five straight La Liga games with 21 goals scored and a dominant 5-1 victory over Feyenoord in the Champions League opener—Rodri insists growth comes from learning through setbacks.

“Teams that win have shown that improvement is necessary, and it comes with experience,” he reflected. “Before winning, you have to lose and learn. I’ve played many Champions League matches before lifting the trophy. Players gain wisdom year by year.”
