Cristiano Ronaldo Faces Possible Six-Month Ban After Leaving Portugal Squad Amid Clash with Coach Jorge Jesus
Cristiano Ronaldo May Face Six-Month Suspension After Leaving Portugal Camp
Cristiano Ronaldo risks a suspension of up to six months following his sudden exit from the Portugal national team camp, which happened after a heated disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus. The incident took place in Copenhagen ahead of the UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.
Departure Sparks Disciplinary Concerns
The veteran striker left the squad abruptly after being benched for the previous game against Norway. His walkout puts him in violation of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) rules, exposing him to potential disciplinary measures including a suspension and financial penalties.
Strict Federation Rules on Player Absences
The FPF’s disciplinary code is clear about unauthorized absences. According to ESPN, any player who, once called up, abandons or fails to participate in training sessions, matches, or any national team activity without valid justification can be suspended for one to six months. Additionally, professional players may face fines ranging from 500 to 1,000 euros.
Conflict Rooted in Selection Decisions
The tension arose after Jorge Jesus decided to keep Ronaldo on the bench during the match against Norway. Jesus stood firm on his decision during a press conference in Copenhagen, stating, "I am the manager. I told the player he was not going to play. I'll put him on the bench; if I need you for 30 minutes, you’ll play, if not, you won’t. No player will ever change my mind. Not him, not anyone in football. Not any president either. Never, zero."
Tensions Affect Training and Matchday Availability
Following these remarks, Ronaldo refused to train with the squad at Parken Stadium on Wednesday. An official statement from the FPF confirmed the situation without detailing the conflict: "Parken Stadium training update: Joao Felix rejoined the group. Francisco Conceicao (ruled out for tomorrow) and Cristiano Ronaldo did not train." Having missed Tuesday's session as well, Ronaldo was ultimately excluded from the matchday roster for Thursday’s game.
Portugal Faces Key Matches Without Their Leading Scorer
The Selecao now prepares to face Denmark on Thursday in Copenhagen, followed by a home game against Norway on Sunday. These matches serve as a crucial test of Jorge Jesus' control over the squad without relying on Portugal’s all-time top scorer. Meanwhile, the FPF faces the difficult choice of whether to enforce a long suspension on one of their most iconic players.
