Scaloni's Defensive Shake-Up: Senesi Steps In for Injured Balerdi
Lionel Scaloni’s World Cup blueprint lasted only as long as a training session.
Argentina’s head coach has been forced into a late defensive reshuffle after Leonardo Balerdi suffered a severe muscle tear in his right leg, a blow that ripped up part of his carefully drawn tournament plans and opened the door for Marcos Senesi.
The injury, confirmed as a problem in the soleus of Balerdi’s right leg, struck during training and immediately cast doubt over his place in the squad. The medical report left little room for debate. Argentina’s national team moved quickly to make it official, announcing: “Defender Leonardo Balerdi suffered a muscle injury in the soleus of his right leg and will not be able to be part of the squad that will play in the World Cup.”
A cold, clinical diagnosis. A brutal end to a dream.
Scaloni, though, refused to rush the next step. He parked any final decision until after a pre-tournament friendly against Iceland, using the game as a live laboratory to test his defensive structure and weigh up his options.
“Today’s test left me satisfied and cleared up many doubts regarding what the team might be lacking... Maybe I’ll take one or two more days to announce Balerdi’s replacement,” he said, hinting at both relief and responsibility as he spoke about the balance of his back line.
The pressure of that choice sat heavily on the coaching staff. Behind the scenes, the management team made no attempt to hide their disappointment for Balerdi, a player who had forced his way into the picture and then seen his chance disappear in an instant. They also stressed the detail and care that went into picking the man to replace him, knowing every decision in a World Cup squad is magnified.
In the end, the call went to the defender who had been waiting on the fringes.
Senesi, on standby and hoping but not knowing, finally received the message every reserve dreams of. He will now travel to the Argentina camp in Kansas City, stepping into a World Cup squad at the age of 29 with just three caps to his name.
For him, the last 24 hours have been transformative.
Only recently, the former Bournemouth defender agreed a free transfer to Tottenham, effective from July 1. That move alone would have marked a major milestone in his career. Now, layered on top of that, comes a World Cup call-up with the reigning champions, and a reunion with his future club team-mate Cristian Romero inside a defensive unit packed with pedigree.
It was back in 2022, in a low-key outing against Estonia, that Senesi first pulled on the Albiceleste shirt. That debut felt like a tentative first step. This is different. This is a plunge into the deep end of international football, into a back line built to defend a world title.
Balerdi’s misfortune has opened a door that might not have swung wide again. Senesi walks through it with a Tottenham contract in his pocket, Romero alongside him, and a World Cup ahead. Now the question is simple and unforgiving: can he turn a frantic call-up into a permanent place in Argentina’s plans?
