Scotland's Path to World Cup Knockouts After Brazil Defeat

Following their 3-0 loss to Brazil, Scotland's chance of making it to the last 32 of the World Cup is no longer in their hands. Fans must now wait and see if Scotland can advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams from the group stage.

What Does It Take for Scotland to Progress?

Among the 12 teams finishing third in their groups, only eight will move forward. When teams tie on points, goal difference becomes the deciding factor. Scotland’s 3-0 defeat dropped their goal difference to -3, making their path tougher.

Currently, four third-placed teams rank below Scotland, while five share the same point total, four of which have yet to play their final games. Losing heavily has reduced Scotland's odds; Opta data suggests teams with three points and a -3 goal difference had only a 42% chance to reach the knockout phase. This compares to 63% for -2 and 84% for -1.

Recent results have not helped Scotland’s cause: South Africa upset South Korea, Ecuador defeated Germany, and Sweden drew with Japan, all complicating the picture.

Scenarios Scotland Need to See

With eight groups still finishing their matches, Scotland require at least four teams to end worse than them in the third-place rankings. These outcomes would favor Scotland:

  • Thursday – In Group D, Paraguay and Australia both have three points and face each other. A draw sees both through. Scotland needs Paraguay to lose by two or more goals or Australia to suffer a defeat by four or more.
  • Friday – Group I calls for Senegal and Iraq to draw, or Iraq to win by no more than two goals. In Group H, Uruguay must lose to Spain, and in Group G, Iran needs to fall to Egypt.
  • Saturday – Croatia should lose to Ghana by at least three goals in Group L. Group K requires DR Congo and Uzbekistan to draw or for Uzbekistan to win by no more than three goals. Lastly, Group J mirrors Group D, with Austria and Algeria both on three points. Scotland needs Algeria to lose by two or more goals or Austria to be beaten by four or more.

Waiting Game Ahead

Scotland's fans might face some tense moments before knowing if their team will make history by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time. The next few days will reveal if the right combinations come together.
