Tchouameni Commits to Real Madrid: United's Midfield Dilemma

José Mourinho has barely settled back into his office at Valdebebas and he has already shut the door on one of his old clubs.

Manchester United, searching frantically for midfield solutions, have been forced to watch from a distance as Aurélien Tchouameni commits his future to Real Madrid. The France international has agreed a new deal in the Spanish capital, extending his stay by a further five years and ending any realistic prospect of a move to Old Trafford.

Mourinho backs his midfield pillar

United had circled Tchouameni as a potential cornerstone of their rebuild, sounding out the possibility of prising him away amid whispers that Madrid might cash in. Those hopes have gone. RMC Sport report that the 26‑year‑old was intent on staying, even when approaches arrived – United’s among the most serious.

Madrid, for their part, treated his renewal as a priority. The club have effectively drawn a thick line through his name on every rival’s shortlist. Mourinho, back at the Bernabéu and already reshaping the squad, will build with Tchouameni at the heart of his midfield rather than on the transfer market.

It is a significant call. Of Madrid’s four summer signings, only one is a midfielder, and Bernardo Silva is not a direct competitor for Tchouameni’s role. The message is clear: the Frenchman is not up for debate. He is part of the spine.

United’s midfield scramble

The timing stings for United. Within hours of news emerging about Tchouameni’s new contract, the club had finalised a £50million agreement with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, with the Brazilian due for a medical today (Thursday).

Santos is only one piece of a wider puzzle. United have been working through a long list of midfield targets this summer: Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Felix Nmecha, Sander Berge. They have explored plenty of avenues and hit plenty of dead ends.

They were priced out of moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. Ederson is also heading for a medical now that Brazil’s World Cup campaign is over. All this before Manuel Ugarte picked up an injury at the tournament, a setback that may push United towards signing a third midfielder.

Right now, Kobbie Mainoo stands as their only fully fit central midfielder. For a club of United’s scale, that is not a platform; it is a warning light.

Tchouameni, then, was never just another name. He was the type of midfielder who could have altered the entire dynamic of their window. Instead, United must watch him double down on Madrid.

Madrid close ranks

Madrid have not only locked in one key midfielder; they have also moved to shut down talk around another. With speculation swirling about a possible move for Enzo Fernández, the club issued a rare and pointed official statement.

The wording left no room for interpretation. Madrid insisted they had made no effort, “either directly or indirectly”, to sign the Chelsea midfielder and stressed they had “no intention of pursuing such an operation”. They went out of their way to praise both Enzo and Chelsea, highlighting the “excellent institutional relationship” between the clubs, while condemning the rumours as “unfounded” and “not reflective of reality”.

It was a public defence of their transfer strategy and their reputation, and a reminder that not every rumour deserves oxygen.

Between Tchouameni’s renewal and the Enzo denial, the picture is sharp. Mourinho’s Madrid are closing ranks around their core, choosing continuity in midfield while they tweak elsewhere. United, meanwhile, continue to chase solutions in a market that keeps moving away from them.

One club is protecting what it has. The other is still searching for what it needs.
