Tottenham are moving aggressively for Cody Gakpo, with the club emerging as the leading contender to prise the Dutchman away from Liverpool as part of a major reshaping of Ange Postecoglou’s forward line.

This is not a tweak. It is a full-scale rebuild of the attack to match the money already thrown at the rest of the squad.

Spurs reload after £237m spree

Tottenham have already torn into this window. Around £237m has gone on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, heavy investment through the spine of the side. Smart business on free transfers has followed, with Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson all arriving without fees.

Goalkeeper? Addressed. Defence? Reinforced. Midfield? Upgraded. The next job is clear: put firepower around it.

On the right, the plan is set. Savinho is the primary target and has told Manchester City he wants out, giving Spurs the green light to push on. Talks between the clubs have been ongoing, with a deal thought to be achievable at around £60m. Tottenham see the Brazilian as a key piece of their new-look attack.

Up front, the script was supposed to feature Eli Junior Kroupi. Spurs were less than 24 hours away from lodging an opening bid for the Bournemouth striker before a fractured metatarsal wrecked that move. Surgery followed, and with Kroupi ruled out for three to four months, any transfer this summer is off the table.

That injury has forced Tottenham to pivot. And fast.

Gakpo moves to the top of the list

Into that gap steps Cody Gakpo. Fabrizio Romano recently flagged the Dutchman as a name to monitor for Spurs in the coming days and weeks, noting that Tottenham “really like the player.”

Now that interest has sharpened.

Journalist Paul O’Keefe reported on Saturday that Gakpo is “now a leading contender as Tottenham look to add to their attacking options,” placing Spurs front and centre in the chase for the 27-year-old.

From a tactical point of view, the fit is obvious. Gakpo operates primarily off the left, driving inside with power and precision, but his time at Liverpool has shown he can also lead the line as a central striker. That dual role mirrors exactly what Tottenham were seeking from Kroupi: a wide forward who can flip into a No. 9 when required.

For Postecoglou, that kind of flexibility is gold. It allows rotation without ripping up the system, offers cover for injuries, and gives him the option to shift shapes mid-game without burning through substitutions.

The question, as always, is price.

Liverpool set a £72m bar

Liverpool are not prepared to let Gakpo go cheaply. According to Anfield Watch, the club have set a valuation of £72m (€85m) for the Netherlands international.

That figure has not been plucked from thin air. Liverpool are understood to have used Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to Barcelona as a benchmark, nudging Gakpo’s price slightly higher on the back of that deal.

“Anfield Watch understands Liverpool have priced Cody Gakpo at £72m (€85m),” the outlet reported, adding that the Gordon transfer formed the base of their thinking.

For Tottenham, that creates a clear equation. A double swoop for Savinho and Gakpo would demand a combined outlay well north of £130m on two wide forwards alone, on top of a window in which they have already spent heavily. It would be a statement not just of ambition, but of absolute commitment to reshaping the attack in one go.

The opportunity is there: a right-sided livewire in Savinho, a left-sided powerhouse in Gakpo who can also play through the middle, and a manager who wants his team to attack relentlessly.

Now it comes down to how far Spurs are willing to push, and whether Liverpool’s valuation holds firm once the real negotiations begin.
