Tottenham Break Transfer Record for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle

Tottenham have ripped up their own transfer history to land Sandro Tonali, completing a club‑record deal that could soar to £100m and handing Roberto De Zerbi the midfield conductor he has long admired.

The 26-year-old Italy international arrives from Newcastle after three seasons on Tyneside, with Spurs agreeing an initial £92.5m fee plus £7.5m in add-ons after an earlier £80m offer was rejected. It is a statement signing from a club that only just escaped relegation last season.

“I’m very happy to be here,” he said. “People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one.”

De Zerbi gets his “special player”

If Tonali sounded sure, De Zerbi sounded delighted. The Spurs head coach has followed the midfielder’s career since his early days at Brescia, the club from De Zerbi’s hometown.

He described Tonali as a “special player” and made no secret of how long he has tracked him. Interest this summer was heavy, but the Italian coach underlined that Tonali’s intention never wavered: he wanted Tottenham. De Zerbi believes the fans “will love what he brings to the team.”

This is not a speculative punt. It is a manager finally getting the heartbeat he trusts at the centre of his project.

A frantic rebuild in north London

Tonali’s arrival crowns a hectic and expensive summer at Spurs. The club, shaken by last season’s brush with relegation, have moved aggressively to reshape the spine of the side.

Mateus Fernandes has already joined from West Ham in an £85m deal, another heavyweight investment in midfield. At the back, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have come in on free transfers, while centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke is part of a package that could see Tottenham spend a combined £237m on him, Fernandes and Tonali.
