UEFA Introduces Swiss Format for European International Qualifiers Starting 2028

International football is on the brink of a major change. UEFA is set to approve the use of the Swiss format, similar to that seen in the club Champions League, for the Nations League and the qualification phases of World Cups and European Championships beginning in 2028. This decision was confirmed by AS ahead of the official ratification in Thessaloniki.

A New League Structure Featuring 36 National Teams

This revamped system will do away with traditional group stages. Instead, it will establish a league composed of 36 national teams. Each team will compete in six matches, split evenly between home and away games, against opponents from various skill levels. The goal is to reduce predictable fixtures and boost the appeal and value of TV broadcast rights.

Changes to Scheduling and Venues

Alongside this, FIFA plans to roll out double international windows. During these periods, national teams will play four matches within a 15-day timeframe. Another notable update involves the venue for the 2029 Champions League final, which has been announced as Camp Nou.
