Wales Withdraws Support for Gianni Infantino’s FIFA Re-election Amid Leadership Controversy

Gianni Infantino, who has served as FIFA president since February 2016, faces growing opposition as Wales publicly withdrew its support for his re-election bid ahead of the 2027 vote. This move highlights increasing concerns over his leadership following a controversial commercial proposal by FIFA.

Controversy Surrounding FIFA Forward Enterprise

The dispute began with FIFA’s announcement of a new subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), designed to manage commercial rights for upcoming tournaments through minority investments from third parties. After widespread criticism from global football bodies, including UEFA and the English FA, FIFA reversed the decision on August 1.

European football associations strongly opposed the plan, even threatening to boycott FIFA competitions such as the men’s and women’s World Cups. All 55 UEFA member associations had backed this stance earlier in the week.

"The FIFA Forward Enterprise project was intended to provide a basis for further strengthening our FIFA Member Associations and our sport worldwide," said Infantino. "But after careful listening, it became clear the project caused divisions that were no longer in football's best interests. The proposal will not proceed."

Leadership Under Scrutiny

Despite retracting the FFE plan, Infantino’s leadership is under fire. UEFA, Concacaf, and the English FA have all voiced concerns about governance and management within FIFA. On August 3, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) announced it no longer supports Infantino for the 2027-2031 term.

"Recent failures in governance, leadership, values, and stakeholder management have led to a loss of confidence in Mr. Infantino," the FAW stated. "Failing to put football’s best interests first is a failure we cannot accept."

The FAW reportedly sent a formal letter to FIFA outlining its stance.

Other Football Associations Demand Change

• Dutch FA: Expressed a fundamental breach of trust in Infantino’s leadership, stating they no longer have confidence in him.
• Norwegian FA: President Lise Klaveness welcomed the withdrawal but urged a deeper cultural change in FIFA towards openness and away from political power struggles.
• German FA: President Bernd Neuendorf accused Infantino of acting unilaterally and irresponsibly against football’s interests.

Next Steps and Election Details

The next FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, during the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco. Each of FIFA’s 211 member associations will have one vote. The recent backlash signals a turbulent path ahead for Infantino’s attempt at another term.
