Weekend Sports Schedule: World Cup, Wimbledon, and More

World Cup fever may be raging on the far side of the world, but this is one of those weekends when the remote control never really gets a rest at home.

From a relegation fight in the League of Ireland to All-Ireland semi-finals, Wimbledon finals weekend and a Tour de France settling into its rhythm, the schedule is relentless. The World Cup knockouts simply sit on top of an already stacked few days.

Below is where the real action lies.

Friday: Survival, titles and a long night of sport

The World Cup dominates the bookends of the day, with Mexico v England in the last 16 kicking off at 1am on RTÉ 2 and BBC/UTV. Later, Portugal v Spain takes the prime 8pm slot on RTÉ 2 and BBC 1, a heavyweight tie that will shape the tournament’s latter stages.

Closer to home, though, there is a match with very different stakes. Waterford host St Patrick’s Athletic in the League of Ireland Premier Division at 8pm on Virgin Media Three. Rugby league stacks three Super League fixtures back-to-back on Sky Sports Plus: Leigh v Castleford (3pm), Hull KR v Wakefield (5.30pm) and Catalans v Leeds (8pm). Racing fans have Newmarket on ITV4 and Virgin Media Two from 1.15pm to 5pm.

Sunday starts early and loud. UFC takes over TNT Sports Box Office from 2am as Conor McGregor faces Max Holloway in Paradise, Nevada, a bout that will command attention well beyond MMA’s core audience.

The World Cup rolls on with Quarter-final 4 at 2am on RTÉ 2 and BBC/UTV, and by the time the sun is properly up, the focus swings back to Europe. The men’s Wimbledon final anchors the afternoon on BBC 1 from 1.05pm to 8.15pm, with BBC 2 covering from 11am. For tennis fans who’ve only dipped in and out all fortnight, this is the appointment they mark.

The All-Ireland SFC semi-final between Dublin and Kerry at 4pm on RTÉ 2 and BBC 2 is the centrepiece of the GAA weekend. These are the fixtures that shape summers and define eras.
