World Cup 2026: Players at Risk of Missing Round of 32 Due to Yellow Card Suspensions
As the group stage of the 2026 World Cup approaches its final matches, some key players face the risk of missing their team's first knockout game if they receive another yellow card. While goals and defensive records shape who advances, disciplinary actions by referees also play a decisive role. A mistimed foul or reckless challenge could see a crucial player sidelined for the Round of 32 before the next phase even begins.
Understanding Yellow Card Rules for World Cup 2026
The basic rules remain familiar. Yellow cards are issued for offenses such as repeated fouls, deliberate stoppages of attacks, time-wasting, or simulation intended to win free kicks or penalties. Two yellows in the same match lead to a red card, resulting in immediate ejection and a suspension for the following game. Straight red cards carry the same one-match ban, though longer suspensions can occur depending on severity.
Accumulated yellow cards from separate games also count. Two cautions over different matches automatically trigger a one-match suspension, often catching players off guard during tournaments.
What differs this year is when yellow cards reset. With FIFA expanding the tournament to 48 teams, all yellow cards now clear after the group stage and again after the quarterfinals. Previously, single cautions stayed on record until the quarterfinals, meaning a booking early on could still rule a player out of the Round of 16.
New reasons for red cards include covering the mouth to conceal words during disputes and deliberately leaving the field to protest decisions. VAR can review and overturn certain wrongful send-offs, including mistaken second yellows and unjust reds.
Can Players Miss the Round of 32 Because of Yellow Cards?
Yes, but only if they pick up a second yellow during the last group match. Thanks to the reset rule, a single yellow earlier in the group won't affect the knockout rounds by itself. Players carrying one caution into the final group game must avoid another or face suspension for the Round of 32. Red cards or second yellows in that last match also cause automatic bans for the next fixture. After the group stage ends, every player begins the knockouts with a clean disciplinary slate.
Players One Yellow Card Away From Suspension
The list below includes players who have received a single yellow card in the group stage and will miss the Round of 32 if booked again in their final group match. This reflects bookings recorded after the first two rounds of group fixtures.
*Note: Miguel Almiron was sent off in Paraguay's second group match and is banned for their third group fixture, so he is not at risk of missing the Round of 32.
One notable absence is South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena, who already has two yellow cards. His suspension applies to the final group match, and since all cards reset after the group stage, he would return fresh should his team advance.
