Xavi Praises Lamine Yamal for Ballon d'Or, Reflects on Barcelona Legacy, and Prepares for Netherlands Debut

Newly appointed Netherlands coach Xavi Hernandez has publicly supported Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal as a top contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or. Speaking at the KNVB headquarters in Zeist before his first match leading the Dutch national team against Germany, Xavi described the 19-year-old forward as an exceptional talent of his generation.

While he acknowledged the impressive World Cup performance of Lionel Messi, Xavi insisted that Spain’s World Cup winners deserve the main spotlight. He expressed full confidence that Yamal will soon be one of the dominant figures in world football.

Legacy of Developing Barcelona's Youth

Reflecting on his time managing at Camp Nou, Xavi expressed pride in nurturing academy players such as Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, and Pau Cubarsi, who have become champions on the global stage. He recalled the effort it took to steady Barcelona during one of its toughest financial periods over the past quarter-century.

“We did our bit to help this generation achieve things. If we were able to contribute in some way to the club’s recovery during what was practically the worst period in its history, we are already happy. Lamine is special, he’s different, he’s 19 and he’ll undoubtedly win it, but this would be a good year for him to win it now,” said Xavi.

The 46-year-old also praised current Barcelona manager Hansi Flick for maintaining the club’s strong progress.

Turning to his new role, Xavi pointed out the close tactical link between Dutch football and Barcelona’s classic positional style. His transition to the KNVB complex has been smooth, with players and staff embracing a cycling routine to training sessions.

“We have many connections with this country at a footballing level. People want to see attacking, they want to see positional play, the same philosophy we have in Barcelona. I feel this connection,” Xavi explained.

Xavi’s debut as head coach will come in a high-profile UEFA Nations League match against Jurgen Klopp’s Germany at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. Despite key absences like injured playmakers Frenkie de Jong and Xavi Simons, he remains confident in his squad's ability to compete.
