Youri Tielemans will have to wait.

Manchester United’s £35m summer signing from Aston Villa has not been named in the travelling squad to face Atletico Madrid this afternoon, delaying a debut that already felt imminent after his post‑World Cup break.

The Belgian only linked up with his new team-mates at Carrington in recent days, reporting for duty alongside compatriot Senne Lammens. Both stay behind as United head out for their third friendly of the summer, so the first sight of Tielemans in red will have to come later in pre-season.

Carrick keeps his core together

While some managers churn through line-ups in July, Michael Carrick has gone the other way. Between the friendlies against Wrexham and Rosenborg he resisted the temptation to rip things up, and he sticks again with a structure that already looks close to his Premier League blueprint.

In midfield, Mason Mount drops into a deeper role alongside Andrey Santos. It is a pairing designed to control the ball and tempo, freeing Shea Lacey to operate where he does the most damage — as the No10.

Lacey keeps that central creative brief after his lively displays earlier in the tour. Out wide, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu will offer pace and direct running, tasked with feeding Joshua Zirkzee, who again leads the line.

Carrick’s willingness to give his senior players serious minutes hints at what awaits Tielemans. Once fully up to speed, the Belgian is expected to walk straight into this framework rather than be eased in gently from the bench.

Departures, injuries and a hungry bench

Tyler Fredricson plays no part after his midweek move to Lausanne-Sport, trimming Carrick’s defensive options. Up front, Benjamin Sesko is still believed to be managing a shin injury and may not feature, a frustration for a player who needs rhythm as much as goals at this stage of the summer.
