Joshua Zirkzee's Struggles at Manchester United and Juventus Interest

Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United career has never really caught fire. Now, with Juventus circling and patience thinning in the stands, it may be approaching its natural end.

Reports in Italy and England claim Juve are in advanced talks with United over a loan deal that would include a £30 million option to buy. For a player who arrived with high hopes from Bayern Munich in 2024, it feels like a decisive moment.

A Talent That Never Took Hold

Zirkzee is 25 now, no longer the raw prospect he was when United brought him in under Erik ten Hag. The numbers tell their own story: five goals in 56 Premier League appearances. For a centre-forward at Old Trafford, that return is brutal.

He never truly nailed down a starting role. First under Ruben Amorim, then under Michael Carrick, he remained on the fringes, a squad option rather than a pillar of the attack. The Stretford End never quite bought in, and he never quite forced them to.

Yet inside the club, and in Zirkzee’s own mind, the door hasn’t been fully closed. The Dutch striker is understood to want another crack at establishing himself under Carrick, believing that European football in the 2026/27 season could open up more minutes and more trust. He even pushed to leave in January, only to be told by United that a mid-season exit was off the table.

Juventus Move Gathers Pace

The stance appears to have softened. United are now said to be open to a loan with a £30m option, despite paying around £36.5m for him just two years ago. Club officials reportedly accept that the reduced figure reflects his current market value and his failure to produce consistent performances in England.

Juventus, who have been hunting for a striker, initially targeted France international Kolo Muani after his difficult loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur. Negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain stalled over the fee, and that dead end has pushed the Turin club towards Zirkzee.

The switch in focus has been swift. Juventus are now viewed as the most serious contenders for his signature, with talks said to be moving at pace. Roma retain a long-standing interest, but Juve’s acceleration in negotiations has put them in a strong position.

Crucially, Zirkzee’s camp is reported to have reacted positively to Juventus’ approach. The forward knows Serie A, and Serie A knows him.

A Return to Familiar Ground

Italy is not new territory for Zirkzee. He spent a season on loan at Parma and then two seasons at Bologna, building a reputation as a technically gifted forward suited to the slower, more tactical rhythm of the league. That experience has shaped his thinking. He is understood to view Serie A as a far better tactical fit for his style than the helter-skelter intensity of the Premier League.

That contrast has been stark at United. There have been flashes — most recently in a 5-0 pre-season win over Rosenborg, where he impressed and reminded everyone of the player he can be when the game flows through him. But when the real stuff starts, those moments have rarely translated into league form.

Squeezed Out at Old Trafford

The reality of his position in Carrick’s squad is unforgiving. Zirkzee currently sits behind Benjamin Sesko and Mateus Cunha in the pecking order. The potential return of Marcus Rashford to the centre-forward mix threatens to push him even further down the line.

For a player of his age and profile, another season as a bit-part option makes little sense. For United, a loan with a sizeable option to buy offers a clean way out of an expensive gamble that never quite paid off.

So the equation is simple. A club willing to build around him in a league he understands. A manager at United who has other preferred options. A fanbase that never fully embraced him. A transfer fee that, while lower than his original cost, still represents a respectable recoup.

If Juventus close this deal, Zirkzee will walk back into a country where his game is appreciated and his strengths are understood. The question now is not whether he fits Manchester United, but whether this is his last chance to prove he ever really did.
