Al-Nassr's Rakan Al-Ghamdi Faces Setback with Knee Injury
Al-Nassr have been hit with a harsh setback just as the Roshn League is about to restart, losing one of their most promising young players at a moment when his career seemed ready to lift off.
Double blow for first team and U-21s
Medical tests have confirmed that 21-year-old Rakan Al-Ghamdi has suffered a sprained knee ligament along with cartilage bruising. The diagnosis means he is expected to be sidelined for between four and six weeks, according to Saudi newspaper Arriyadiyah.
The injury cuts into two squads at once. Al-Ghamdi had been splitting his time between the first team and the under-21 side, giving Al-Nassr valuable depth in both groups. Now both lose him at a point in the season when every option matters.
The timing stings. Al-Ghamdi had just begun to force his way into the senior picture. Australian coach Ange Postecoglou handed him his first-team debut in the second half against UAE club Al-Ain in the opening round of the AFC Champions League Elite. The night ended in a heavy 4-0 defeat for Al-Nassr, but for the young midfielder it was supposed to be the start of something.
Instead, his progress has been abruptly halted.
Injury in youth build-up
The setback came not on a big continental stage, but in the quieter setting of a youth-team training session. Al-Ghamdi picked up the injury during the final practice before the under-21 clash with Damac last Friday.
Al-Nassr’s youngsters went on to win that match 1-0 in the Joy League Elite competition. The result offered some satisfaction, but it came at the cost of a player who had become central to their plans.
For the youth side, losing a key figure at this stage of the campaign hurts. For the first team, it removes a fresh option just as he was beginning to be trusted in competitive minutes. For the club as a whole, it is a double blow.
Headaches for Postecoglou as league resumes
The senior squad are due back in training on Monday evening, after being given time off following their Asian assignment. That return marks the start of preparations for the resumption of the Roshn League, with Al-Nassr set to face Al-Diriyah on 9 October at Al-Awwal Park in the eighth round.
Al-Nassr currently sit third in the Roshn League table on 16 points, two behind leaders Al-Hilal. The margin is slim, the room for error even slimmer.
Al-Ghamdi’s absence now drops another problem onto the technical staff’s desk. He had been building a role that bridged the gap between the academy and the senior squad, offering energy, flexibility and depth across competitions.
Instead of using the coming weeks to strengthen his place in Postecoglou’s plans, he will spend them in the treatment room, watching his teammates fight for position in a title race that will not slow down for anyone.
