Alonso Reflects on Caicedo Mistake After Chelsea's Loss to Arsenal

Chelsea walked out against Arsenal on Sunday without one of their key pillars in midfield, and their manager knows exactly why.

Mauricio Alonso admitted he misjudged Moisés Caicedo’s return from injury after the Ecuadorian was ruled out of the 2-1 Premier League loss at Stamford Bridge. The decision left Chelsea short of their influential midfielder for one of the biggest fixtures of their season so far.

Caicedo’s campaign has barely got going. He missed the league opener against Fulham and sat out the League Cup win over Luton Town, watching from the sidelines while Chelsea tried to build early rhythm without him.

His long-awaited return finally came in a high-tempo clash against Brighton. It should have been a straightforward step back into the side. Instead, it turned into a setback.

Brought on in the 68th minute for Pedro Neto, Caicedo lasted only 14 minutes before hobbling off, clearly in discomfort. Alonso was forced into another change, turning to summer signing Valentin Barco to see out the game. That brief cameo was enough to end any hope of Caicedo featuring against Arsenal.

Post-Match Reflections

After the defeat to Mikel Arteta’s side, Alonso fronted up.

“It is not longer term but it’s about assessing the risk,” he said, as quoted by Metro. “Probably, last week, we took him too early and I don’t want to make the same mistake again.”

The admission was blunt. Chelsea had pushed too hard, too soon. This time, Alonso is determined not to gamble.

The temptation to lean on absentees after a loss is always there, especially when it’s a player of Caicedo’s calibre. Alonso refused to go down that road.

“It’s easy after defeats to talk about the players that you are missing,” he said. “I’m not going to go there, I am happy with the players that we have.

“For sure all the managers need to deal with injuries, with suspensions. To have all the players available for all the games is impossible. But we need [Caicedo and Colwill] because they are top players and with them we are a better team.”

No excuses, but no disguising their importance either.

Chelsea now have little time to dwell on the Arsenal setback. The schedule tightens again with a Carabao Cup third-round tie against Leeds United on Wednesday, a different kind of pressure but a competition Alonso can ill afford to treat lightly.

Caicedo’s involvement in that game remains uncertain. The manager’s words point towards caution, not risk. Chelsea want their midfield anchor back, but this time they intend to make sure he stays back for good.
