On a humid evening in southern Thailand, Andros Townsend’s warm-up took a surreal and alarming turn.

The former England winger, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, was going through his pre-match routine at Pattani on Saturday when a heavy pitch roller suddenly veered towards him. A member of the ground staff appeared to lose control of the machine as it trundled across the touchline.

For a brief, shocking moment, Townsend’s left leg was caught underneath the roller.

On Instagram, he joked that playing Stoke away “wasn't so bad after all” – a nod to the old English football cliché about cold, unforgiving trips to the Bet365 Stadium.

It also tied back to one of his recent posts, where he had already been poking fun at the contrast between sun-soaked away days in Thailand and those windswept Premier League visits to Stoke.
