As Townsend went through his warm-up, a member of the home staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller, which then clattered into the 35-year-old.

His left leg was briefly trapped under the machine. For a few alarming seconds, it looked serious.

On Instagram, he referenced his recent light-hearted comparison between a sun-soaked away day in Thailand and the notorious chill of Stoke’s stadium. This time, the tone shifted.

Thai fans have already embraced his sense of humour. One post labelled him “The King of Memes in Thai League history.” Townsend’s reply was short and on brand: “trust me” – followed by four laughing emojis.
