Andros Townsend Survives Pitch Roller Accident in Thailand

Andros Townsend has escaped serious injury after being run over by a heavy pitch roller in a shocking incident in Thailand – and still ended the night on the pitch for PT Prachuap.

The 35-year-old former England winger was caught by the moving ground equipment during pre-match preparations at Tinsulanon Stadium ahead of PT Prachuap’s Thai League 1 clash with Pattani FC.

Freak collision on the touchline

As the squad went through their warm-up on the playing surface, Townsend attempted an aerial backheel near the touchline. In the same channel, a large roller was being driven across the grass.

The two paths met in terrifying fashion.

The machine rolled straight into Townsend, knocking him to the ground and trapping him underneath the heavy equipment. Footage that quickly spread across social media showed the roller continuing its route before making contact with the former Premier League winger, sparking instant panic.

Several PT Prachuap players turned away in horror, some with hands on heads, while others sprinted towards the touchline to help free their team-mate. Stadium staff and players rushed to the scene as the warm-up descended into chaos.

From panic to relief

Medical staff reacted immediately, treating Townsend on the pitch and assessing damage to his hip and thigh. Given the nature of the collision and the weight of the machinery, fears of a serious, even career-threatening injury were very real.

Then came the remarkable twist.

After being examined and helped from the scene, Townsend avoided major damage and was able to take his place on the substitutes’ bench. The sense of shock gave way to relief around the ground as it became clear he had escaped the worst.

On the field, PT Prachuap did their part to steady the evening. Goals from Saharat Kanyaroj, Taoua Ferreira and Edgar Mendez fired the hosts into a commanding 3-0 lead.

With the game deep into stoppage time and the result secure, Townsend completed the turnaround from horror to action by stepping onto the pitch as a late substitute.

A career that has seen it all – almost

Townsend, capped 13 times by England, joined PT Prachuap after a spell at Kanchanaburi Power, following his stint with Turkish side Antalyaspor.

His journey has already taken in some of English football’s most demanding stages, with notable spells at Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Everton and Luton Town. Few episodes in that long career will rival the surreal and frightening scenes he experienced in Songkhla.

PT Prachuap closed out the 3-0 victory, banking three points on a night overshadowed by the pre-match drama involving their marquee signing.

Townsend is expected to undergo further assessments on his hip and thigh in the coming days as the club moves to protect one of its key attacking figures.

The video of the incident, though, is not going away. It continues to ricochet around the global football community – a stark reminder of how, even before a ball is kicked, a routine warm-up can turn into something no one inside a stadium will ever forget.
