The good news arrives in the shape of Jurrien Timber. The Dutchman is back in full training and, in Arteta’s words, “in a really good place.” Whether that translates into minutes against Chelsea will be decided after Saturday’s final session, but simply having him in contention changes the feel around the squad.

Declan Rice, another casualty from the Villa win, has trained all week and is expected to be available. That alone steadies the midfield. With Guimaraes being monitored and Rice likely to feature, Arteta at least has the core of his engine room intact.

If Mosquera does not make it, Ezri Konsa is ready to step in for a full debut at centre-back. Arteta has already confirmed the summer signing is “certainly available in the squad.” It would be a fierce stage for a first start, but the need is obvious.

Thin attack, big responsibility

Up front, the picture is far less crowded than Arsenal would like. Deadline day stripped depth from the attack: Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri and record sale Gabriel Martinelli all departed, and none were directly replaced. The starting XI looks strong; the bench far less so.
