Arsenal's Injury Updates: Saka and Rice Back for Season Opener
Arsenal have been handed a timely lift before Sunday’s season curtain-raiser against Manchester City, with Mikel Arteta confirming that Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are back in the frame to play.
The two headline names, along with new signing Martin Zubimendi, trained with the squad and are on course to be involved against the champions.
“They will be available, they trained with us today, they will train tomorrow and if they are in the condition that we expect them to be, they will be involved,” Arteta said at his pre-match press conference, sounding confident rather than cautious about their readiness.
The mood around the training ground has helped. Arteta highlighted the attitude of a group returning from a demanding summer looking sharp rather than rusty.
“Most of them [came back] earlier than expected, really fit with all the testing and they all seem in great condition,” he noted, a pointed compliment for a squad that knows it has to match City from the first whistle of the campaign.
Defensive headaches linger
The good news in attack and midfield is not mirrored at the back. Arsenal will be without Jurrien Timber and William Saliba for the clash with Enzo Maresca’s side, with both defenders still working through their rehabilitation programmes.
Saliba’s situation is the more serious. Arteta described it bluntly as a “long-term injury,” removing any hope of a quick fix in the heart of his defence.
Timber’s outlook is brighter. The Dutchman is edging closer but is still not ready for a competitive return.
“Jurrien is progressing really well,” Arteta said. “He is on the pitch, we are ramping up now with certain actions and especially the volume and the load. I think he is on a good trajectory, but there is still a few weeks to go. Wilo, as we all know, it’s more a long-term injury.”
Timber’s importance to Arteta’s tactical plan is obvious. His ability to shift between roles and build play from deep makes him a key piece of Arsenal’s structure, and the staff are treating his recovery with care rather than urgency.
The club expects a crucial phase in the next week to ten days, when Timber is due to start stepping back into full group sessions.
“We have to wait and see,” Arteta explained. “He needs to start to train with the group in the next week or so hopefully, and then see how he progresses from there. It’s been a long-term issue, and we want to make sure that every step that we take is the right one, he feels right to do that, because he’s such an important player for us.”
Eyes still on the market
While the immediate focus is on City, the clock is ticking in the background. The transfer window is closing in, speculation around defensive reinforcements is growing, and Arsenal’s manager did little to cool it.
Linked with several high-profile defenders, Arteta refused to name targets but made the club’s stance crystal clear.
“I am not going to talk about an individual but what I can obviously tell you is [about] the ambition of the club,” he said. “It is big that we want to improve the squad, we want to evolve the squad, in order to achieve. We have detected some areas that they can be a strength in – that is what we are trying to do.”
Saka and Rice back, Timber edging closer, Saliba out long term, and the market still alive: Arsenal walk into Sunday with belief, gaps to solve, and a manager who clearly thinks this squad has another level to reach.
