Arsenal and Netherlands Agree Timber Fitness Plan Amid Injury Crisis
Arsenal and the Netherlands have moved into protection mode over Jurrien Timber, drawing up a personalised workload to guard the defender’s fitness at a time when Mikel Arteta’s back line is creaking.
Dutch outlet Voetbal International reports that Arsenal have been in direct contact with new Oranje head coach Xavi, with both camps agreeing a tailored training programme for Timber. The message is clear: no unnecessary risks.
That approach is set to keep Timber out of the Netherlands’ upcoming clash with Germany. It’s a precaution, not a punishment – a recognition of just how long the defender has spent on the sidelines and how vital he is expected to be for club and country over the coming months.
Timber’s problems began during the run-in of Arsenal’s Premier League-winning campaign, a blow that stripped Arteta of a versatile defender just as the season reached its peak. He made it back to the bench for the Champions League final, but never got on the pitch. The World Cup came and went without him being fit enough to feature.
Now the knock-on effect is being felt all over again.
Defensive Puzzle
Arteta is staring at a defensive puzzle with several key pieces missing. Ben White picked up a knock before the international break, leaving a hole on the right. Declan Rice, who filled in at right-back against Brighton, has since withdrawn from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, removing another emergency option.
The problems don’t stop there. Cristian Mosquera is out with a knee injury. William Saliba is nursing a back issue. New signing Ezri Konsa, signed for his ability to cover multiple roles, has so far been locked in at centre-back.
The pressure on Arsenal’s medical and coaching staff is obvious. Every decision on Timber now carries extra weight. Push him too hard and they risk another spell out. Handle him carefully and he could be the solution to a defensive stretch that threatens to define Arsenal’s early-season rhythm.
For the Netherlands, the Germany fixture will go ahead without a player they hope will anchor their defence for years. For Arsenal, the international break has become less about rest and more about survival. How long can Arteta juggle these absences before it starts to bite in the Premier League and Europe?
