Arsenal's Pursuit of Julián Álvarez: Barcelona Dreams vs. England Reality
Arsenal refuse to give up on Julián Álvarez – even as the player dreams in Catalan rather than north London red.
The Premier League champions have tracked the Atlético Madrid forward all summer, pushing to land a marquee attacker before the window shuts. Álvarez, though, has made little secret of his preference: his ideal move is to Barcelona, and he would rather stay in La Liga than return to England.
Spain insists the story isn’t over.
England calling – with Arsenal at the front of the queue
Reports from Spain suggest the momentum is swinging back towards Arsenal. Sport claim Álvarez’s future “will be decided in the coming hours” and that “all signs point to England,” with Atlético said to be actively steering him towards N5 rather than another Spanish rival.
The 26-year-old has already set the stage for a move. Earlier in the summer he admitted “the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” after Real Madrid reportedly saw a £129 million bid knocked back by Atlético.
Since then, Mikel Arteta has picked up the phone himself. The Arsenal manager has spoken directly to Álvarez, trying to sell him on a central role in his project. For now, the former Manchester City forward is still fixated on Barcelona.
But the market has a way of twisting dreams.
London talks, Barcelona noise
Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany is currently in London, officially to negotiate with Chelsea over striker Nicolas Jackson. His presence has instantly fuelled speculation. Sport Witness report that Álvarez’s name could also be on the table during the trip, with Arsenal ready to pounce if the door opens.
The saga is tangled. Barcelona are also being linked with Viktor Gyökeres, while Gabriel Jesus is understood to be on their shortlist. Any movement there could drag Arsenal further into the web: they are weighing up their own forward options, and the same names are starting to overlap.
FourFourTwo understand Arteta is braced for the possibility that no new striker arrives at all this summer. He will not panic-buy. But he is clearly keeping the path clear for Álvarez if the opportunity appears.
Arsenal’s reshuffle and the Álvarez offer
Around the edges of the squad, decisions are already being made. Gabriel Martinelli has reportedly turned down a proposal from Galatasaray. There is said to be interest in Victor Osimhen, though that remains only one of several attacking ideas rather than a concrete push.
Other pursuits have stalled. Arsenal are not in the race for Bradley Barcola. Moves for Vinícius Jr and Morgan Rogers have evaporated: Vinícius has extended his stay in Madrid, while Rogers has chosen Chelsea in a British record transfer.
So the focus, once again, swings back to Álvarez.
Sport Witness, relaying the report from Spain, state that Arsenal have put forward an offer worth “€80m plus Viktor Gyökeres,” with the Argentine told he could double his salary at the Emirates and take on a key role under Arteta.
That role is flexible – and that is precisely why Arsenal are pushing. Álvarez could replace Martinelli on the left, driving inside from the flank, or operate as a central striker, rotating with Kai Havertz and reshaping the front line entirely. How he would be used may depend on who departs London Colney in the coming weeks.
The clock is ticking. Barcelona remain the dream. England, and Arsenal, might yet be the reality.
