Aston Villa Signs Aaron Wan-Bissaka on Loan

Aston Villa have secured the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham on a season-long loan, with a deal that could lock in his future at Villa Park.

The agreement for the DR Congo right-back carries what the clubs describe as a “conditional obligation to buy” – a clause that means Villa may be required to make the move permanent if certain triggers are met. The precise conditions remain undisclosed, though West Ham had previously been quoting a £25m fee to interested sides.

It is a structure Villa know well. Last season they took Harvey Elliott from Liverpool on a similar season-long loan with an obligation to buy set at £35m. That transfer would only have become permanent if the midfielder reached 10 league appearances. He managed just four, the threshold was never met, and he returned to Anfield this summer. Villa are clearly prepared to work at the edges of the market, pushing risk into performance.

Wan-Bissaka arrives after sitting out West Ham’s opening two Championship fixtures while negotiations played out, a notable absence for a side adjusting to life outside the Premier League. The 28-year-old had joined the Hammers from Manchester United in 2024 on a seven-year contract, a long-term commitment that underlined his status as a cornerstone of their rebuild.

Across two seasons in east London he made 65 appearances, including 25 league games last term as West Ham slid out of the top flight and into the Championship. That relegation has now opened the door for his immediate return to the Premier League.

Before his spell at West Ham, Wan-Bissaka built his reputation at Manchester United, where he played 190 times and collected major silverware, lifting the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. His defensive reliability and one‑v‑one prowess made him a regular feature in high-pressure fixtures at Old Trafford.

On the international stage, he has become a key figure for DR Congo. Wan-Bissaka started all four of their matches at the 2026 World Cup, anchoring the right flank as they battled their way to the round of 32.

Now comes a different test. A new club, a familiar league, and a contract that could yet turn a loan into something far more permanent if he delivers.
