Arsenal Stars Return for Man City Clash: Arteta's Triple Boost

Arsenal head into the Community Shield with a timely injection of star power. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martin Zubimendi are all set to be available for Sunday’s showdown with Manchester City in Cardiff, with Mikel Arteta confirming the trio are back and ready to be involved.

Rice and Saka have rejoined the squad after extended breaks following England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals in North America. Zubimendi, fresh from lifting the trophy with Spain, is also back in full training and in contention.

“They will be available,” Arteta said on Friday, speaking about Rice, Saka and Zubimendi before facing the Premier League champions. “They trained with us today, they will train tomorrow. If they are in the condition we expect them to be, they will be involved.”

For Arsenal, it changes the feel of the occasion. What looked like a curtain-raiser to manage through now has the edge of a proper early test with key men on the pitch.

Saka was initially due to report back on Monday, but he cut his holiday short and returned on Saturday, as did Spain goalkeeper David Raya. That early return underlines the urgency and focus around Arsenal’s preparations, with the club eager to hit the ground running after last season’s title near-miss.

Several others have already shaken off their post-World Cup breaks. Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Mikel Merino are back and featured in Wednesday’s pre-season draw with Como, alongside Raya. The squad looks deep, even if not quite complete.

One major absence still looms. William Saliba faces an extended spell out with a long-term back problem, aggravated during the World Cup. The issue does not require surgery, but it strips Arsenal of their defensive lynchpin at a time when sharpness and continuity are vital.

Arteta, though, is encouraged by what he has seen from his returning stars, particularly Rice and Saka, who both pushed through the pain barrier for much of last season.

Saka managed an Achilles problem through the run-in, rarely resting despite the strain. Rice revealed during the World Cup how neural pain in his hamstring had troubled him since Christmas, followed by a calf issue and illness. Those concerns had raised questions about their workloads heading into another demanding campaign.

Arteta is adamant the break has done its job.

“We haven’t noticed anything,” he said. “They have individual plans. Through the time they had with the national team they’ve been trying to evolve those issues and they have improved.

“In the rest period that they had, they both had specific programmes for themselves. They’ve been doing those and so far what I saw the last two or three days, it was really good.”

So Arsenal’s attack and midfield look close to full strength again. The same cannot yet be said for their defence.

Jurrien Timber will miss the Community Shield, still hampered by the groin injury that has dogged him since March. The Dutch international missed the World Cup entirely and managed only a brief substitute appearance in the Champions League final in May. Hopes of a quick reset this summer have faded.

Arteta offered a cautiously upbeat update without shifting the timeline too much.

“[He is] progressing really well,” he said of Timber, ahead of a meeting with a City side now led by former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca. “He’s on the pitch, we're ramping up now certain actions, especially the volume and the load.

“I think he’s on a good trajectory but still a few weeks to go.”

Asked if Timber could feature before the international break next month, Arteta refused to draw a line in the sand. “I don’t know. We have to wait and see.

“He needs to start to train with the group in the next week or so hopefully and then see how he progresses from there.

“But obviously it’s been a long-term issue and we want to make sure that every step that we take is the right one. He’s such an important player for us.”

So Arsenal walk into Cardiff with their two English centrepieces back, their new Spanish midfield general available, and their defensive jigsaw still missing a key piece. Against the champions, under a new coach, in the first real spotlight of the season, we are about to find out how ready this squad truly is.
