Athletic Bilbao vs Elche: Battle for Points at San Mamés

San Mamés Barria expects noise, pressure and points on Saturday. Athletic Bilbao arrive in front of their own crowd with momentum behind them; Elche CF turn up trying to stop a slide that already feels dangerous this early in the season.

Athletic sit 9th in La Liga with 6 points and a statement result in their pocket: a 3-0 dismantling of Atlético de Madrid last time out. Edin Terzic’s side didn’t just win, they imposed themselves. Two victories on the bounce, two games unbeaten, and a team starting to look comfortable in its own skin.

Elche are living a very different story. One point, 19th place, and three straight defeats coming into this trip to Bilbao. Their most recent outing – a 3-2 loss to Real Sociedad – underlined the problem. They can threaten, they can score, but they cannot keep the door shut. Four consecutive matches conceding, four without a win, and now one of the most hostile grounds in Spain on the horizon.

Fortress forming at San Mamés

Terzic’s last starting XI in the league win over Atlético showed a clear spine and a sharp edge. Unai Simón in goal, Aymeric Laporte and Yeray Álvarez marshalling the back line, Yuri Berchiche adding bite and width on the left. In midfield, Iñigo de Galarreta and Benat Gerenabarrena offered control, while Robert Navarro and Oihan Sancet linked play and probed between the lines.

Up front, the Williams brothers again carried the threat. Nico Williams stretching defences, Iñaki Williams driving at them. Against Atlético, that blend of pace, pressing and direct running broke a usually stubborn defence apart. At home, with the crowd behind them, the formula looks even more dangerous.

Athletic do have one confirmed absentee: Unai Egiluz is out with a cruciate ligament tear. Even so, the core of the team that swept aside Atlético is intact, and the rhythm of back-to-back wins has turned San Mamés into a place where they expect to dictate.

Elche search for a spark

On the opposite bench, Martín Anselmi needs a reaction. Elche’s last XI in the 3-2 defeat to Real Sociedad showed plenty of attacking intent: Matías Dituro in goal; Buba Sangaré, Víctor Chust, Pedro Bigas and Tete Morente across the back; a midfield unit featuring Facundo Buonanotte, Germán Valera, Gonzalo Villar and Javi Morcillo; Fer Niño and Ezequiel Ponce leading the line.

They scored twice away to a strong Real Sociedad side, yet still came away empty-handed. That has become a pattern. Two away games without a win, four straight matches conceding, four without tasting victory. Elche can’t afford to let this run deepen, but they now walk into one of the loudest arenas in the league with a defence that has yet to settle.

The task is clear: tighten up or suffer. Anselmi must decide whether to stick with his front-foot approach or sacrifice some of that ambition to shore up a back line that has been repeatedly exposed.

Recent history favours the hosts

The last time these two met, Athletic edged it 2-1. That result, coupled with their current form, leaves the Basque side as clear favourites on paper. Two wins in a row, confidence flowing, and a crowd that senses a chance to climb the table early in the campaign.

Elche, though, arrive with the urgency of a side already under pressure. One point from their opening games, three defeats in a row, and a brutal run of conceding in every match they play. Something has to give.
