Barcelona's Expected Line-Up Against Valencia: Hansi Flick's Tactical Decisions

At Barcelona, no one sleeps easy when the team sheet is due. Not this season. Not with Hansi Flick in charge and a squad stacked with players who all have a case to start.

Ahead of the league clash with Valencia in the 2026-27 campaign, rotation is no longer a theory. It is the plan.

Flick’s chessboard

Camp Nou has never been a sanctuary for guaranteed starters, but the current level of competition is brutal. Every line of the pitch is crowded. Every decision has a consequence. And with the Champions League opener against Feyenoord just around the corner, Flick is clearly ready to shuffle his pack.

The first concern comes with Lamine Yamal. The young forward trained in the gym after taking a knock, and doubts hang over his involvement. Flick has not revealed where the problem is, only that it is painful. Crucially, he has the depth to avoid turning one injury into a full-blown crisis.

Between the posts, there is at least one certainty. According to Spanish outlet “Mundo Deportivo”, Joan Garcia is locked in as the starting goalkeeper. Everything in front of him, though, is up for debate.

Defensive jigsaw

Flick used the last training session to test two different back lines. Nothing is officially confirmed, but the picture is getting clearer.

Eric Garcia began the season as the first-choice right-back before losing his place to Jules Kounde in the third match. Now, with rotation on the table, Eric Garcia is back in the frame to start on the right.

In central defence, the situation is just as ruthless. Andreas Christensen forced his way into the XI twice, against Elche and Rayo, despite not even being named among the initial favourites. He took his chance, then suddenly finds himself at risk of dropping out again as Flick considers other combinations, including Cubarsi and Gerard Martin.

On the left, Espart has quietly torn up the script. A natural right-back, he has nailed down the left-back role, edging out Joao Cancelo in a position that once looked made for the Portuguese. For now, the shirt is Espart’s to lose.

Midfield furnace

If the defence is competitive, midfield is a battlefield.

Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Fermin Lopez, Marc Bernal, Rodri and Bryan Farinas all bring something different. Technique, intensity, timing, goals. Crucially, they all have the numbers to argue they should start against Valencia.

Flick has been mulling over a bigger role for Rodri, flirting with the idea of dropping him straight into the XI. But with Feyenoord on the horizon, the balance of risk and rotation matters. The expectation is that he leans again on Marc Bernal alongside Pedri, keeping one eye on Europe while still fielding a strong enough side for La Liga.

Gavi changes the rhythm with his aggression and character. Olmo gives the team control between the lines, while Fermin Lopez is all about his late runs and presence in the box. The creative role has swung back and forth between Olmo and Fermin in recent games. This time, it is Fermin’s turn to occupy that central attacking slot.

Firepower and a fitness doubt

Up front, the competition is just as unforgiving.

Yamal and Raphinha have started every match so far, with Yamal operating high and wide and Raphinha as an outright forward option. That continuity is now under threat because of Yamal’s knock.

Gabriel Jesus adds experience and guile, but he has only just arrived and is still integrating into Flick’s system. Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon have been trading starts, sharing minutes on the wings and adapting to different roles depending on the opponent.

With Yamal expected to drop out of the starting line-up, the wide berths open up. The plan points towards Gordon and Adeyemi both coming in from the flanks, with Raphinha leading the line.
