Garcia seemed to lose his footing just before the interval, slipping late in the first half. He finished out the opening 45 minutes but did not emerge from the tunnel for the restart. Instead, the crowd saw Szczęsny jogging towards the goalmouth, pulling on his gloves for his first competitive minutes of the season in a Barcelona shirt.

Hansi Flick turned to the veteran, choosing the experienced Pole ahead of summer signing Dominik Livakovic for the second half. It was a clear statement of trust in Szczęsny’s big-game pedigree, even on a night when the change had not been planned.
