Barrow Captain MJ Williams Ends Goal Drought with Victory

MJ Williams had almost forgotten the feeling.

Nearly two years without a goal, a relegation on his record and five winless games to start the new campaign – then, on Saturday, the Barrow captain finally stepped into the spotlight.

His opener in the 3-0 victory over Sutton United did more than break a personal drought. It handed new boss Adam Murray his first win since taking charge in the summer and gave a bruised club a jolt of badly needed optimism.

Captain finds his range

Williams, 30, is not in the side to rack up numbers on the scoresheet. His work usually lives in the shadows: breaking up play, organising, keeping things ticking. So when the ball hit the net, he felt the surprise as much as the surge of joy.

"It was a bit of a shock really but I think I've been due one," he told BBC Radio Cumbria. "It is something I have always wanted to do is add goals but sometimes I don't find myself in the right positions."

That is changing. Under Murray, Barrow have leaned hard into their set-piece work, and the captain is starting to profit.

"We work a lot on set-pieces, so I am finding myself in better positions now," he said. "It is a massive part of our game and I want to add more goals to my game and hopefully I can this season."

The finish against Sutton set Barrow on their way to a first win at the sixth attempt, a release of tension after last season’s drop from League Two and a stuttering start to life in the division below.

Healing a bruised connection

Relegation scars do not fade quickly. Players feel them. Supporters live with them.

"It has been tough for the fans, I've never wanted it to be like that, obviously going on from last season," Williams admitted. "They have been through some tough times, as the club has, and to have that moment with them at the end of the game was massive."

The full-time scenes – players and fans celebrating together after a convincing 3-0 win – felt like more than just three points. They looked like the first step towards repairing a bond.

"Since the gaffer has come in, he has spoken about wanting to be all together and have that connection with the fans," Williams said. "I think in some of our performances we have deserved more from games. To get that 3-0 win and have the scenes at the end was brilliant for all of us."

The captain’s tone told its own story: relief, but also intent. One win is not enough. Not after what came before.

Long road, big stakes

Next up is a long haul to Worthing and a test at Woodside Road that Williams is treating as a marker for where this Barrow side is heading.

"We all know it is a long journey but it is a massive game for us," he said. "It will be a big week for us, we need to go there and put on a good performance."

No talk of fatigue. No soft landing if things go wrong.

"There are no excuses in this game, we will get down there, prepare right and go there with confidence after that first win we have had."

That confidence has finally seeped into the dressing room. Winning changes everything – the mood, the noise, even the way Sunday mornings feel.

"The feeling around the team has been brilliant this week," Williams said. "When you are not winning it is tough but to wake up on a Sunday knowing you have won on a Saturday is a bit of a relief. Last season we didn't have many of those feelings and it is not nice in football to be coming in when you are not winning."

The message, though, is clear: enjoy it, then park it.

"This week has been brilliant for all of us," he added, "but it is important now that we get back on it on Saturday and get a massive three points."

One goal has lifted his shoulders. One win has lifted the club. Now Barrow’s captain has set the bar: this cannot be the high point of their season.
