Bayern's Musiala Reveals Neurological Issue After Collapses
Jamal Musiala has revealed he is undergoing treatment for a “neurological dysfunction” after collapsing on the pitch for the second time in four days.
The Bayern Munich midfielder went down six minutes after coming off the bench in a 4-2 friendly win at Heidenheim on Tuesday, cutting short what should have been a routine pre-season outing. He appeared dazed as medical staff rushed to him, before being helped from the field.
It was a worrying repeat. On Saturday, during Bayern’s 3-1 friendly victory over RB Leipzig in Munich, Musiala had already collapsed once, prompting immediate concern inside the club and far beyond it.
This time, the 23-year-old chose to address the situation himself.
In a statement on Instagram, Musiala confirmed he has been diagnosed with “temporary, brief, but easily treatable absence seizures, which are due to a neurological dysfunction”.
“These can lead to the recent episodes, like the one against Leipzig or now in Heidenheim,” he wrote. “I know they seem scary at first glance – but for me, they’re currently just part of my everyday life.
“I’m receiving excellent medical treatment and am very optimistic. FC Bayern and my family and friends are always by my side and supporting me on this journey.”
The message was designed to calm fears, both inside the Bayern dressing room and among supporters who watched one of the club’s key players twice collapse in less than a week.
Bayern stand behind their midfielder
After the Heidenheim game, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl made it clear the club had been fully briefed on Musiala’s condition.
“We knew about it and we are aware of the situation,” Eberl said, adding that the player would address it publicly. “Jamal will speak out. He’s in the dressing room, getting changed and taking a shower.”
The tone was deliberate: no panic, no secrecy, but an acknowledgment that something serious needed explaining.
Musiala is no stranger to setbacks. He missed the first six months of last season after breaking his ankle at the 2025 Club World Cup, an injury that stalled his rise at a time when he looked ready to dominate Bayern’s midfield. He fought his way back to fitness in the second half of the campaign, reclaiming his place and starting three of Germany’s four matches at the 2026 World Cup.
Now comes a very different challenge, one that will be managed not with tackles and dribbles, but with medical plans and careful monitoring.
The diagnosis offers clarity. The treatment, Musiala insists, is in place. The question now is not whether he will be supported – Bayern and Germany both know his value – but how quickly one of Europe’s brightest talents can return to playing without the shadow of another collapse hanging over him.
