Borussia Dortmund’s Youngsters Shine in London with 4-1 Victory over Fulham

Borussia Dortmund’s next generation took a punch in London – and then completely took over.

Head coach Daniel Rios sent out a side built almost entirely from the U23s for the Premier League International Cup clash with Fulham’s youth team. Two U19s, Luke Fahrenhorst and Jan-Luca Riedl, were promoted for the trip, while Mathis Albert, Kaua Prates, Luca Reggiani and Justin Lerma added the kind of professional experience that changes the feel of a youth fixture.

It showed. Eventually.

Early shock, quick recovery

Dortmund needed barely four minutes to make their attacking intent clear, threatening the Fulham goal almost straight from kick-off. Then came the sting.

From Fulham’s first real foray forward, a corner swung to the near post found striker Jose Sani. His header beat Silas Ostrzinski in the fifth minute, and BVB were behind before they had settled.

The goal jolted the visitors. Rios’ side started to dictate the ball, but for a spell they laboured in the build-up, struggling to pick their way through a deep, compact Fulham block. Possession was there; penetration was not.

That didn’t last.

As Fulham retreated further and found it harder to escape their own half, Dortmund’s youngsters began to move the ball with more conviction. The pressure finally told on 25 minutes. Albert, already pulling strings from deep, clipped a superb long pass into space, and Fadi Zarqelain finished it off for a fully deserved equaliser.

Fulham wobbled. Dortmund pounced.

Just three minutes later, Albert turned from provider to scorer. A loose pass out from the English side landed at his feet around 17 metres from goal. One touch to set himself, one calm strike, and the ball was in. From 1-0 down to 2-1 up in the space of 180 seconds, the match had flipped.

BVB carried that 2-1 lead into the break, and more importantly, carried the momentum.

Second-half surge

The restart brought no change in the pattern. Rios’ team came out hunting a third goal, and they didn’t waste time getting it.

In the 52nd minute, Takato Yamamoto whipped in a corner and Jesper Verlaat attacked it with conviction, powering his header over the line for 3-1. Fulham’s resistance, already fragile, was cracking.

Five minutes later, it broke completely.

Justin Lerma, one of the players with professional minutes in his legs, produced the moment of the night. A brilliant solo run, defenders left trailing, and a composed finish for 4-1. It was the kind of individual quality that separates a good youth side from a serious one.

The only sour note: Lerma had to leave the pitch injured shortly after his goal. His exit took some of the gloss off a sparkling display, but not the control Dortmund had established.

From there, the holders managed the game with maturity. Fulham fashioned one notable chance, only for Ostrzinski to deal with it cleanly. At the other end, Dortmund kept carving out opportunities right to the end.

Captain Azhil went close in the 82nd minute. Degener threatened in stoppage time (90+1'), and Ngambia had another look at 90+5'. The scoreline stayed at 4-1, but the margin could easily have been heavier.

By the final whistle, there was no doubt: after an early setback, BVB’s youngsters had dominated the full 90 minutes and banked their first three points of this season’s Premier League International Cup.

Coach’s verdict and what comes next

Rios was clear in his assessment: his team had earned it. The response to going behind, the control, the volume of chances – all of it underlined why this group carries the title-holder tag with confidence.

Now the schedule splits.

Borussia Dortmund’s U19s turn back to domestic business, facing Rot-Weiss Essen on 5 September in the DFB youth round at the Brackel training ground. The U23s hit the road next Saturday for a Regionalliga West clash at VfB Hilden on 29 August.

As for the Premier League International Cup, that chapter pauses for a while. Dortmund’s youngsters will not return to the competition until 15 December, when Aston Villa await as their second group-stage opponents.

If this comeback in London is any indication, that date is already circled.
