On his 100th appearance, he played like it mattered. Thundered a long-range effort just before the break and carved out Brentford’s best chance soon after half-time.

Vitaly Janelt – 7

Clipped Cole Palmer just enough to stop an early surge and flirted with conceding a penalty. From there he imposed himself physically in midfield, a performance that will only strengthen his case for a first Germany cap under Jurgen Klopp.

Mikkel Damsgaard – 6

Below his usual standards from distance and from dead balls for most of the night. Then he whipped in a vicious corner that sparked the opening goal and changed the mood.

Kevin Schade – 7
