Brian Fariñas: From Barcelona's Reserves to First-Team Contender

Brian Fariñas has forced his way into Hansi Flick’s thoughts. What he has not done yet is settle his own future.

The Barcelona midfielder has been one of the revelations of pre-season, to the point that Flick personally blocked a loan move to Girona before a ball was even kicked this summer. The coach wanted a proper look at him. He got it — and he liked what he saw.

From almost out the door to first-team contender

Fariñas arrived at pre-season with a deal to Girona already lined up. On paper, it made sense: a talented youngster, regular minutes in La Liga, a familiar pathway for Barcelona prospects.

Flick ripped that script up.

Determined to judge the player himself, the German insisted Fariñas stayed. Training sessions quickly turned into auditions, and the 21-year-old treated them as such. He impressed the staff, matched the tempo, and refused to fade into the background among established names.

Most importantly, he showed he can plug several gaps. Fariñas operated as a defensive midfielder, as an interior, and pushed higher up when needed. Then came the curveball: Flick used him at right-back against Birmingham. The experiment worked well enough to add another line to his résumé and another reason for the coach to keep him close.

He is no longer just “the kid training with the first team.” Inside the club, he is now seen as someone who can genuinely contribute.

That, however, does not guarantee minutes.

No way back to the reserves – but no clear path either

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have already closed one door: Fariñas will not return to the reserve team. That decision alone underlines how far he has climbed in a short space of time.

The choice is now binary. Either he stays with Flick’s senior squad, or the club revive the loan to Girona that had been agreed before pre-season. There is no halfway house in the third tier to fall back on.

On merit, Fariñas has done just about everything he can. Yet his next step hinges on a player who has not kicked a ball for Barcelona in months.

Frenkie de Jong’s knee holds the key

Frenkie de Jong’s recovery has become the hinge on which Fariñas’ season may swing.

The Dutchman is working his way back from a rupture of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury suffered during the World Cup. He has opted for conservative treatment, avoiding the operating table for now, though surgery remains on the table if his progress stalls.

Barcelona are watching closely. Every medical update on De Jong does more than shape the midfield pecking order; it helps determine whether Fariñas spends the year learning at Flick’s side or playing every week in Girona.

If De Jong is ruled out for a longer spell, the logic is clear: with the reserve-team option discarded, keeping Fariñas in the first-team squad gives Flick extra cover and a versatile body in a crucial area of the pitch.

If De Jong returns on schedule and the midfield fills up again, the argument for a Girona loan grows stronger. Regular top-flight minutes might trump the occasional cameo at Montjuïc.

For now, Fariñas waits in a strange limbo. His performances have earned trust. Girona’s interest has not gone away. Yet his fate is tied to a teammate’s knee, to scan results and medical reports rather than to anything he does on the pitch.

Barcelona like what they have seen. The question is simple, and brutally familiar for a young player on the verge: will they like it enough to make room for him when everyone is fit?
