Brown Bears Hold Rhode Island to 1-1 Draw Despite Dominance

KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown did almost everything but win.

Dominant in territory, ruthless in shot volume, and on the front foot for long stretches, the Bears walked out of the URI Soccer Complex on Thursday night with only a 1-1 draw against Rhode Island to show for it.

They will feel that two points slipped away.

Vargas Strikes Early

The tone was set inside the opening quarter-hour.

With Brown already pinning the Rams back, senior defender Kyra Treanor surged down the right flank in the 12th minute, beat her marker, and whipped a ball into the six-yard box. Waiting there, unmarked and composed, was senior forward Angelina Vargas.

One touch. One clean strike. Back of the net.

It was Vargas’ third goal of the season and the sixth of her Brown career, a sharp finish that rewarded the Bears’ aggressive start and hinted at a long night for the home side.

Brown kept pushing. Vargas forced another save in the 14th minute. Senior forward Joy Okonye buzzed around the box and tested the goalkeeper in the 25th. Just a minute later, senior midfielder Corine Gregory added to the pressure with a shot on target, and in the 33rd, sophomore forward Jael-Marie Guy joined the barrage.

By halftime, the numbers told the story of a team in control: 11-1 in shots, 7-1 in shots on goal, 5-2 in corner kicks. Vargas led the way with four shots and three on frame. Okonye chipped in three shots, two on target. Brown’s attack was relentless; the scoreline, at 1-0, flattered Rhode Island.

Back Line Stands Tall

Behind that pressure, Brown’s defensive unit quietly put in a full shift.

Treanor, senior Claire Silverman, junior Chesney Robinson, and junior Brooke Birtwistle all logged the full 90 minutes across the back line, limiting Rhode Island to just three shots all night and only two on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Addison Etter was largely a spectator, called into action just once for a save in the draw.

For a team that has built its early-season identity on structure and composure, it was another performance that underlined Brown’s defensive steel as much as its attacking ambition.

Rams Hit Back

But a one-goal lead in college soccer is fragile, no matter how lopsided the stats look.

In the 68th minute, Rhode Island finally found a foothold. The Bears failed to fully clear their lines, and the ball broke inside the penalty area to Megan Steinbach. She took her chance, leveling the match at 1-1 and flipping the mood inside the stadium.

Suddenly, the game that Brown had controlled for over an hour was back in the balance.

The Rams nearly turned it completely on its head in the 83rd minute, when a driven effort crashed off the crossbar, a warning shot that underlined how quickly momentum can swing.

Late Push Falls Short

Stung by the equalizer, Brown surged forward again.

The Bears piled on pressure in the closing stages, winning corner kicks in the 87th and 88th minutes as they hunted a winner that their overall performance probably deserved. In the 90th minute, Guy found space and unleashed a shot on target, forcing one final save from the Rhode Island goalkeeper.

It was the last act of a night defined by Brown’s dominance and Rhode Island’s resilience.

The final ledger was stark: Brown led 17-3 in shots, 10-2 in shots on goal, and 10-4 in corners. Okonye finished with game highs in both shots (six) and shots on goal (four), while Vargas and Guy each added four attempts, combining for five shots on target between them.

Unbeaten Run Rolls On

The draw moves Brown to 4-2-1 on the season and keeps the Bears unbeaten in the state of Rhode Island at 4-0-1, including a perfect 4-0-0 at home. Their current unbeaten streak now stands at three matches (2-0-1).

The numbers say this team is trending upward. The performance on Thursday backed that up, even if the scoreboard did not.
