Bruno Fernandes' Strain as Manchester United Captain

Bruno Fernandes limped down the Old Trafford tunnel on Wednesday night, flanked by medical staff, his body finally showing the strain of a relentless start to the season.

He had, once again, played every minute.

Four games. Four full 90s. Four goals. The 32-year-old has carried Manchester United through the opening stretch of the campaign, and he did it again in the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah FK, capping the performance with a crucial strike. But as the viral footage of him hobbling away from the pitch spread, so did the concern.

Carrick’s gamble with his captain

Michael Carrick knew he was pushing it.

He went into the Sabah game with rotation in mind, but the contest never quite allowed him to follow the script. United were in control, yet the manager felt he could not take his captain off.

“We only had five subs! We had to make certain decisions on what that looked like,” Carrick said, pointing to the limits of the current substitution rules and the tactical picture unfolding in the second half.

The plan to protect Fernandes turned into a necessity to keep him on.

Others were withdrawn. Fernandes stayed. Carrick accepted the load on his talisman has been heavy, but stressed that the broader squad is being built to absorb that burden over time.

“He has played an awful lot, but I think we’re developing the group and the squad to be able to accommodate that in different ways,” he said.

On this night, though, development had to wait.

“Tonight was just one of those things, there were decisions to be made and he ended up staying on,” Carrick admitted, while making it clear a break is coming for his captain at some point if United are to get him through a long, demanding season.

Shaw doubt clouds derby build-up

As if Fernandes’ limp was not enough, Carrick has another major concern before Sunday’s derby against Man City.

Luke Shaw was nowhere to be seen in the squad against Sabah, his absence immediately triggering questions about his availability for the trip across town. United’s left-back is central to their defensive balance, and his potential unavailability would be a serious setback against a City side that rarely wastes chances in the final third.

Carrick tread carefully when asked about Shaw’s condition.

“We’ll have to see. We just kind of looked after him a little bit going into tonight. He wasn’t quite ready for it 100 per cent, so we didn’t risk it. We’ll see how he is over the next couple of days or so,” he said.

No drama in the delivery. Plenty between the lines.

United must weigh Shaw’s importance against the risk of aggravating whatever kept him out. The stakes could hardly be higher: City, sharp and ruthless, waiting at the weekend.

Rashford rested, Sesko steps in

Not every absence carried bad news.

Marcus Rashford also sat out the midweek win, but this time it was by design. Carrick was clear that the forward’s omission was tactical, a calculated move to keep him fresh for the derby and to share the physical load across the squad.

“A little bit of that, yeah, and trying to share the load a little bit, to a point, as well,” he said when asked if Rashford’s rest was precautionary.

That decision opened the door for Benjamin Sesko, who used the Sabah game to bank valuable minutes. For Carrick, this was the other side of rotation: not just protecting the established stars, but accelerating the integration of new ones.

“We’ve got good options, so we’re trying to keep everyone fresh, but with a point where Ben can get good minutes tonight and get him up to speed,” the manager explained.

As the derby looms, United’s season already feels like a balancing act: goals against the grind, rotation against rhythm, risk against reward. And at the heart of it all, a captain who refuses to come off the pitch — even when his body finally starts to protest.
