Big guns back for Arsenal

Arsenal’s squad will look far more familiar on Sunday afternoon. Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi are all set to return to the matchday group after missing the entire pre-season schedule.

None of the trio has played a minute this summer. They only rejoined full training at the start of the week after being granted extended breaks following the World Cup. That careful approach to Saka, Rice and Zubimendi’s minutes opens the door for Guimaraes to start. Arsenal are likely to manage the returning trio’s workload, and the Brazilian is well placed to take on responsibility from the first whistle.

He is expected to operate in tandem with Myles Lewis-Skelly, the academy graduate who has quietly stitched together an impressive summer by starting every pre-season game. If Guimaraes brings the control and personality Arsenal paid for, and Lewis-Skelly maintains his fearless edge, the Shield could offer an early glimpse of the club’s next midfield era.

Ahead of them, Martin Odegaard should resume his usual role as conductor-in-chief, with Arteta leaning again on Kai Havertz up front. The German has often been the manager’s choice in Arsenal’s biggest fixtures, and that trust rarely wavers on showpiece occasions.

Defensive reshuffle and a wide-open wing battle

At the back, Arsenal are still without Jurrien Timber and William Saliba. Their absence keeps the right side of defence in the hands of Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera, who are in line to start with Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori completing the back four in front of David Raya.

Out wide, one of the stories of Arsenal’s summer has been Christos Tzolis. The winger has been among the standout performers in pre-season and now has a genuine chance to turn that form into a major competitive start.
