Michael Carrick's Midfield Challenge: Baleba's Injury Update

Michael Carrick will have to wait a little longer for his powerhouse midfielder.

Carlos Baleba, Manchester United’s £70 million summer signing, is not expected to feature before the international break, extending a frustrating spell on the sidelines for both player and manager.

Baleba ruled out of key early fixtures

The 22-year-old, who became United’s third midfield recruit of the window and their fourth senior arrival after Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow, has yet to kick a ball competitively for the club.

While Santos and Tielemans were thrown straight in with full debuts on the opening day against Hull, Baleba has been forced to watch on as he recovers from an injury sustained earlier in the summer.

There were early doubts that the setback might scupper his move altogether. Instead, INEOS pushed ahead, backing the deal and banking on the long-term upside of a battling midfielder they had tracked for over a year.

The short-term cost is clear. Carrick has been operating with a stripped-back engine room in the opening weeks of the season, leaning heavily on a Tielemans–Mainoo pairing, with Santos as the primary option off the bench.

For a while, the Manchester Derby was pencilled in as Baleba’s potential comeback date. That target has now slipped.

According to Manchester Evening News journalist Tyrone Marshall, Baleba will not be available for the clash with Manchester City. The same report indicates he is also set to miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against his former club Brighton and next Sunday’s Premier League trip to Fulham.

The picture is simple: no competitive action for Baleba until after the extended international break, with a return now expected in October.

The missing piece in Carrick’s midfield

United did not sign Baleba for a quick fix. He arrived on a five-year contract, with the club viewing him as a player who can grow into a cornerstone of their midfield for the next decade.

That long view doesn’t make the current gap any easier to ignore.

With the Cameroon international unavailable, Santos is the only recognised midfield enforcer in Carrick’s squad. Yet the head coach has chosen to leave the Brazilian out of his starting XI, preferring the more technical, lighter-weight combination of Kobbie Mainoo and Tielemans.

They offer guile. They offer passing angles and control. What they do not consistently bring is the kind of raw physical surge that can rip through a press, carry the ball 30 yards and flip the tempo in an instant.

That is precisely why Baleba is seen as so important to Carrick’s tactical plan. His profile – powerful, direct, aggressive in duels – is the element United’s midfield currently lacks.

The hope inside Old Trafford is that, once fit, Baleba can slot alongside Mainoo and give United a blend of craft and muscle they simply do not have right now.

The date circled in red is October 10, when United host Tottenham in the Premier League. By then, Carrick will want more than just another option. He will want the Mainoo–Baleba partnership that so many supporters are already imagining to finally step onto the Old Trafford pitch.
