Michael Carrick Confirms Carlos Baleba's Wait for Manchester United Debut

Michael Carrick has underlined his faith in Manchester United’s next generation while confirming new signing Carlos Baleba will have to wait for his debut ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

The United head coach, speaking before the club’s first home league game of the season, ran through a mixed medical bulletin and a quietly intriguing academy picture as he prepares for a response to last weekend’s setback.

Baleba praise, but debut on hold

Carrick’s excitement about Carlos Baleba was obvious. His availability, less so.

“We're delighted with Carlos,” he said of the summer recruit. “Massive potential. I think it's a really exciting signing for us. I think the quality that he has, the attributes that he has, that offsets a little bit of the balance of the group that we've got.”

For now, United will have to wait. Baleba has picked up a “little ankle issue” that rules him out for the next few weeks. Carrick stressed it is “no major issue”, but it is enough to delay his introduction just as the season begins to take shape.

Carrick refused to put a firm date on when Baleba will be back, though there is hope the midfielder could return before next month’s international break.

Mount back, Diallo still sidelined

There was better news regarding Mason Mount. The midfielder is back in full training with the group and in contention again after his own spell out.

By contrast, Amad Diallo remains unavailable and will miss the Ipswich game. Like Baleba, he is being pencilled in for a possible return before the international window, but Carrick again avoided setting any guarantees.

Both situations underline the fine balance Carrick is trying to strike: eager to add freshness and quality, but unwilling to rush players back and risk a longer absence.

Academy talent on Carrick’s radar

If injuries are forcing tweaks to the senior squad, they are also opening doors for United’s youngsters.

JJ Gabriel is one of those firmly on Carrick’s radar. The highly rated academy prospect has already been training regularly with the first team.

“JJ is one of the boys,” Carrick said. “He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development.”

That line says plenty. Gabriel is not being packaged as a short-term fix, but as a player United want to build up properly, step by step.

Harry Amass is in a different situation, with his long-term future at Old Trafford uncertain, but Carrick’s assessment of the young defender was equally positive.

“I've been really pleased with Harry. I think he had a really good season that didn't finish so good with the injury, but it's been great to have him around pre-season. He's done really well. So, let's see what happens.”

The message is clear: the pathway is there, the manager is watching, and performances – not reputations – will dictate who makes the jump.

“Another challenge” as Ipswich come to town

Attention now turns to Sunday and a fixture that already feels important for United’s early-season tone.

“The first home game of the season is really one we look forward to, and the supporters coming,” Carrick said. “I think we had a setback last week, and you want to get back to playing well and winning football matches.”

Ipswich arrive with momentum after a big result of their own last weekend. Carrick is under no illusions about the scale of the task.

“It is a tough game, Ipswich obviously had a big result last week as well. It'll be another challenge for us.”
