Casper de Norre Injury Concerns After Millwall's Defeat
Alex Neil fears the worst for midfielder Casper de Norre after the Belgian limped out of Millwall’s 3-0 defeat at Wrexham – a moment the head coach pinpointed as the game’s turning point.
De Norre, 29, pulled up just before half-time in Wednesday night’s Championship clash with the Lions 1-0 down, and was immediately replaced. Without him, Millwall unravelled.
“It’s not good,” Neil told BBC Radio London, his verdict blunt. “Senior players know their bodies and he’s definitely felt a pop of some kind.”
From there, Millwall’s night descended into a patch-up job.
Neil had planned to ease Derek Mazou-Sacko back in with a short cameo, but De Norre’s injury forced a rethink. “Derek is not really quite ready to play – he was probably due to get about 20 minutes,” Neil explained. That is why Camiel Neghli was sent on first, with Mazou-Sacko introduced later as legs and options faded.
The strain showed. Young midfielders Daniel Kelly and Jenson Metcalfe began to cramp. Striker Josh Coburn battled on with a heel problem. Every few minutes, Neil was forced into another alteration.
“We ended up having to make wholesale changes,” he said. “The difficulty you’ve got with that is that the understanding throughout the players on the pitch is diluted.”
Wrexham, seasoned and streetwise, took full advantage. With Millwall’s structure fraying and their bench stretched, the hosts tightened their grip and ran away with the contest, adding two more goals after the break to turn a narrow deficit into a bruising 3-0 loss.
“When you come up against an experienced team like Wrexham, it makes it a difficult task,” Neil admitted. “It’s frustrating because we’re probably down to our last third of the squad in terms of trying to get a team on the pitch and trying to be competitive at the level.”
The injury list has left Millwall operating on the margins, scraping together line-ups and asking youngsters to shoulder senior responsibility. De Norre’s setback threatens to deepen that crisis at a time when the fixtures are already stacking up.
There is at least a sliver of relief on the horizon.
Neil expects to have Tairyk Arconte and Kyrell Lisbie back in contention for Saturday’s meeting with Bolton, bolstering a squad that has been stretched to breaking point. Romain Esse could also feature after rejoining from Crystal Palace, though the staff will tread carefully with his workload.
“We’ll see where he is, if he’s available and ready,” Neil said. “I don’t think he’s done loads over the pre-season so we need to be careful.”
Millwall head into the weekend wounded, short of bodies and smarting from a heavy defeat. How quickly they can patch themselves up – and how serious De Norre’s injury proves to be – may shape far more than just the next team sheet.
