Chelsea Faces Early Challenges in Carabao Cup Against Luton Town

Chelsea’s Premier League campaign is only one game old, but the juggling act has already begun.

Fresh from a 3-2 win at Fulham on Monday night, Alonso now has to piece together a side for Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town without two of his key men. The cup may be secondary to the league, but the absentees are anything but minor.

Caicedo and Palestra ruled out

Neither Caicedo nor summer arrival Palestra played a minute in the west London derby, and neither will be on the pitch at Stamford Bridge against Luton. For a coach who wants to rotate and protect legs this early in the season, that’s a serious constraint.

Palestra, signed from Atalanta in the recent window, faces an uncertain return date. Caicedo is a touch closer, but not close enough for Thursday.

Alonso explained that both picked up minor issues in training in the build-up to Fulham and that Chelsea chose caution over risk at this stage of the campaign.

“During the week they had a few setbacks,” he said in his pre-match press conference. “With Moi – and with any [player] – we don’t want to take too much risk. They weren’t ready to play tonight.”

The stance has not changed for the cup tie.

“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it,” Alonso confirmed. “Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend, but we need to check a little bit more with Marco. Otherwise everyone from Monday is okay, Cole [Palmer] is absolutely fine.”

So the midfield and attacking options tighten, and the room for experimentation shrinks.

Goalkeeper question hangs over Sanchez

The injury list is only part of Alonso’s headache. The other sits in goal.

Robert Sanchez’s display at Craven Cottage has drawn scrutiny and sparked talk that Chelsea could move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez before the transfer deadline. That speculation has pushed backup keeper Mike Penders into the spotlight ahead of Luton, with the cup tie an obvious window to hand him minutes.

Alonso, though, refused to show his hand.

“Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity,” he said. “We will decide and then I am giving the team tomorrow to the players, so I prefer to respect that they know first.”

The message is clear: the door is open, but the decision will stay in-house until the dressing room hears it.

Enzo in the middle of it all

While the goalkeeper debate rumbles on, one selection feels nailed on. Enzo Fernandez is expected to feature, even as rumours continue to swirl around a possible move to Manchester City.

Alonso praised the Argentine’s attitude and made it clear that transfer noise has not seeped into training.

“Enzo, yes we expect him to be involved. He is training really well, he’s a good professional, and he will be involved.”

The World Cup winner remains central to Chelsea’s plans for now, and Alonso intends to lean on his composure and control again on Thursday night.

Long-term absentees still out

Behind the short-term knocks, Chelsea are also managing longer layoffs. Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha both missed the opening-day win and will sit out again. The club expects them to return to full training within the next two weeks, but they won’t be part of the Luton equation.

That leaves Alonso walking a tightrope: protect the players he has, keep the early-season momentum, and still treat the Carabao Cup as a competition worth chasing.

A win over Luton would push Chelsea into the next round and strengthen the sense of lift-off under their new coach. The risk is obvious, though. One wrong call on selection, one aggravated muscle, and the early optimism could quickly collide with the realities of a long, unforgiving season.
