Chelsea Face Leeds Without Caicedo in Cup Tie

Moises Caicedo will not be there when Chelsea walk out under the lights against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. No late fitness test, no surprise inclusion. He is out, and Chelsea have accepted it.

The midfielder has barely started his season. He missed the first two games, then lasted just 14 minutes against Brighton before going off in clear discomfort. He sat out the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal as well, and Chelsea have drawn a line: no rushing, no risks.

Xabi Alonso has already lived through what he called “the same mistake” once. He has no intention of repeating it.

There is at least one crumb of comfort for Chelsea. The club do not see Caicedo’s problem as a “longer-term” injury. That matters for the months ahead, but it does nothing for them against Leeds. For this tie, he is unavailable. So is Marco Palestra. Jordan Henderson is still sidelined by the wrist injury he picked up at the World Cup, and Emmanuel Emegha is also missing.

Alonso Holds the Line on Injuries

Alonso has been blunt about Palestra’s situation. Chelsea rate him. They just refuse to cut corners.

“He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the Premier League,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”

The message is clear: this is about the long haul, not a single night in the cup. Early-season injuries sting, especially for a new arrival desperate to make a mark, but Chelsea have decided the bigger picture matters more than a short-term boost.

That bigger picture includes Saturday’s league game at Stamford Bridge against Hull City, which carries more weight than a third-round tie, however lively Leeds might make it. That is why rotation is coming.

Rotation on the Cards

Levi Colwill is back in the frame after a minor fitness issue kept him out of the Arsenal defeat. He is fit and available again, and likely to return. Mike Penders is in contention to start in goal, with Pep Chavarria and Valentin Barco also pushing for places in what could be a heavily tweaked XI.

A possible Chelsea lineup against Leeds reads like this: Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto; Barco, Lavia, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer, Welbeck.

The injury bulletin is brutally simple:

Out: Caicedo, Palestra, Henderson, Emegha.
Doubts: none.

Kick-off is at 8pm BST on Wednesday, September 9 at Stamford Bridge. Alonso will shuffle where he can, protect what he must, and still demand a serious tilt at progression. The question now is whether this rotated Chelsea side can handle Leeds without their record midfielder – and keep something in reserve for Hull at the weekend.
