Chelsea Faces Hull City Without Caicedo and New Signings
Chelsea head into Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Hull City still shorthanded, with Xabi Alonso confirming that four players remain unavailable.
The Blues steadied themselves in midweek with a hard-fought Carabao Cup win over Leeds United, shaking off the sting of last weekend’s derby defeat to Arsenal. Alonso rotated heavily for that tie, but when the game tightened, the big guns had to come on. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers were both called from the bench to drag Chelsea over the line and into the fourth round.
Now comes another quick turnaround. And no reinforcements from the treatment room.
Caicedo still sidelined
Moises Caicedo will not feature against Hull. Alonso shut that door firmly in his Friday press conference.
“Not yet,” he said when asked if the midfielder could return on Saturday. “Let’s see for Brentford, but unluckily not at the moment to take risks with him. Not yet, we are not there yet.”
Caicedo injured himself before the season even began. He finally made his first appearance of the campaign in the wild 4-3 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion in late August, coming off the bench in the second half. The comeback was short-lived. A setback forced him off again and put the brakes on his return.
Chelsea now face another league game without their central reference point in midfield, at a time when the schedule is tightening and the margins are thin.
New boys made to wait
The delay is not just about Caicedo. The wait for three summer signings goes on as well.
Alonso confirmed that Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha will all miss the Hull match. Asked directly whether any of the trio could be involved, he was blunt: “No.”
Pressed again on Henderson and Emegha, he added: “Not tomorrow. We hope they can be (available) for Brentford, and we will see.”
Palestra, like Caicedo, suffered his injury right on the eve of the season. None of the three – Palestra, Henderson, or Emegha – has made an official appearance for Chelsea yet, an awkward reality for a squad already stretched.
There are only two fixtures left before the September international break, starting with Hull and then Brentford. That break will be longer than usual, with national teams cramming four matches into a three-week window as two international windows are merged into one.
The calendar twist changes the calculation. With no further break in October, Chelsea know that rushing players back now could carry a heavy price later.
Eyes on Brentford – and beyond
Inside Cobham, the logic is clear. Rest the quartet now, use the extended international window as a buffer, and aim for a cleaner, more decisive return on the other side. It is the cautious route, but in this schedule, caution can be ruthless.
If anyone is to beat that timeline, Palestra and Henderson stand out as the most realistic candidates. Palestra has already started individual training, edging closer to full fitness and a long-awaited first outing in blue.
Henderson has rejoined team sessions after fracturing his left forearm during the 2026 World Cup, but the medical staff have not yet cleared him for competitive action.
So Chelsea go into the Hull game still patched up, still leaning on the same core of players who had to rescue the Leeds tie. The question now is simple: can this group keep grinding out results until the cavalry finally arrives?
