Chelsea Face Injury Setbacks as Xabi Alonso Confirms Absences Ahead of Luton Clash
Xabi Alonso, Chelsea's head coach, has confirmed that Moises Caicedo and summer signing Marco Palestra will miss the upcoming Carabao Cup match against Luton Town due to injuries. This setback comes after their Premier League opener, where Chelsea secured a 3-2 win over Fulham.
Two Important Players Out
Neither Caicedo nor Palestra took part in the recent league game and both remain sidelined for the Thursday fixture at Stamford Bridge. This limits Alonso's options for rotating his lineup. Palestra, who joined from Atalanta this summer, faces an uncertain recovery timeline, while Caicedo seems a bit closer to returning.
Alonso Details Injury Situation
After the victory at Craven Cottage, Alonso shared that both players suffered minor training setbacks. He emphasized a cautious approach early in the season to avoid rushing anyone back.
"During the week they had a few setbacks," Alonso said during his Wednesday press conference. "With Moi – and with any player – we don’t want to take too much risk. They weren’t ready to play tonight."
He added an update ahead of the Luton match:
"Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it. Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend, but we need to check a little bit more with Marco. Otherwise everyone from Monday is okay, Cole [Palmer] is absolutely fine."
Goalkeeper Concerns and Opportunities
Chelsea are also dealing with goalkeeper questions. First-choice keeper Robert Sanchez faced criticism for his Fulham performance, sparking rumors about a possible move for Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez. Backup goalkeeper Mike Penders might get a chance against Luton.
Alonso commented on goalkeeper selection: "Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity. We will decide and then I am giving the team tomorrow to the players, so I prefer to respect that they know first."
Enzo Fernandez to Play Despite Transfer Links
Amid speculation linking Enzo Fernandez with Manchester City, Alonso confirmed the Argentine midfielder will feature in the cup match. The 2022 World Cup winner has impressed with his professionalism and training.
"Enzo, yes we expect him to be involved. He is training really well, he’s a good professional, and he will be involved," Alonso said.
Other Squad Updates
While Caicedo aims to be fit for the weekend Premier League game, Chelsea continue monitoring long-term absentees. Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha missed the opening victory and remain out but should return to full training within two weeks.
Looking Ahead
A win over Luton would see Chelsea advance in the Carabao Cup and sustain their positive start under Alonso. The manager must balance squad rotation carefully to protect player fitness amid a busy schedule.
