Chelsea Monitor Joao Pedro's Fitness After Injury Concern
Chelsea are bracing for an anxious few weeks as they monitor Joao Pedro’s fitness after the in-form forward pulled out of Brazil’s squad with a knee injury.
The Brazilian has been one of the few bright sparks in Chelsea’s stuttering start to the season, ripping through defences with three goals and three assists in just four league games. He has quickly become the heartbeat of Xabi Alonso’s attack, the player who stitches everything together in the final third.
That is why last weekend’s draw with Hull City came with a sting in the tail. Joao Pedro is believed to have taken a knock to his knee during the 2-2 clash, yet still stayed on the pitch long enough to rescue Chelsea with a late equaliser. The goal masked the concern. The aftermath did not.
He sat out training in the days that followed, alongside Reece James, and was nowhere to be seen as Chelsea slumped to a bruising 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday night. Without him, the attack looked blunt, short of ideas and short of chemistry.
Danny Welbeck stepped in at the Gtech Community Stadium, but the change was obvious. The veteran forward worked hard, chased, pressed, but never quite found the same rhythm with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer that Joao Pedro has already built. The slick combinations disappeared; so did Chelsea’s edge.
Alonso has offered almost nothing publicly on the severity of the problem. Before the trip to Brentford he spoke of a late fitness test and little else, refusing to be drawn on timelines or details. It was classic cloak-and-dagger from the Chelsea boss, and it did nothing to ease the nerves around the club.
Behind the caution, though, sits a dose of optimism.
Reports from ESPN in Brazil indicate Joao Pedro is looking at roughly three weeks on the sidelines. That timeframe rules him out of Brazil’s upcoming friendlies against Australia but points to a return once the Premier League calendar restarts next month.
For Chelsea, that projected schedule is a relief. It means the damage, for now, is limited to international football. If his recovery tracks as expected, Joao Pedro should be ready to feature when Chelsea welcome Bournemouth after the break.
That fixture already carried weight. Chelsea are winless in three league matches, their early momentum stalling just as the fixtures begin to tighten. Now it feels even bigger.
By then, they expect their new talisman back, fit and firing. The question is simple: when he returns to Stamford Bridge after this scare, will Chelsea still be close enough to the pack for his form to matter?
