Chelsea Midfield Woes: Alonso Confirms Caicedo and Palestra Out for Luton
Chelsea will go into their Carabao Cup second-round clash with Luton Town without two of their key midfield options, as Xabi Alonso ruled out both Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra.
Facing the media on Wednesday, Alonso drew a clear line under any hopes of a late recovery for the pair ahead of Thursday night’s game.
“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it [against Luton],” he said when asked about Caicedo and Palestra.
Both players also missed Chelsea’s Premier League opener, a chaotic 3-2 win over Fulham, and their continued absence forces Alonso to reshuffle again in the middle of the pitch.
There was at least a hint of optimism over Caicedo. Alonso admitted the club are targeting a quicker return for the Ecuadorian, while adopting a more cautious stance on Palestra.
“Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend, but we need to check a little bit more with Marco,” he explained.
The news isn’t all grim for Chelsea. The rest of the squad that featured on Monday has been cleared, with Cole Palmer “absolutely fine” after coming through the Fulham clash unscathed.
Young defender Penders is also promoted into the matchday group, a sign that Alonso is ready to lean on the club’s depth as the fixtures start to stack up.
“Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity,” Alonso added.
Chelsea step into the cup tie knowing they will have to manage minutes, protect returning stars, and still avoid an early exit. The absences of Caicedo and Palestra only sharpen that balancing act.
