Chelsea's New Era: Xabi Alonso's Impact with Palestra and Ramon
Chelsea’s new era under Xabi Alonso has not officially begun, but the club are already moving to his rhythm.
Marco Palestra is the first major statement. Jacobo Ramon could be next.
Alonso steps in – and hijacks Inter
Chelsea have beaten Inter Milan to the signing of Palestra, with Fabrizio Romano confirming a verbal agreement between the London club, Atalanta and the player. The deal, worth over €55 million including a sell-on clause, brings one of Italy’s most versatile young defenders to Stamford Bridge on a long-term contract.
This was not a move driven quietly from the boardroom. Alonso put his own stamp on it.
Romano revealed on his YouTube channel that the incoming Chelsea manager personally called Palestra, a 21-year-old Italy international capable of operating at right-back, right wing-back, left-back and left wing-back. Those close to the player say that direct conversation proved decisive.
La Gazzetta dello Sport painted the scene in more colour: a long chat, Alonso even dropping in some Italian, explaining how he had followed Palestra at Cagliari and been struck by his “English-style” physicality. He reportedly outlined a clear vision: competition with Malo Gusto on the right, and the ability to cover the left, where Marc Cucurella has just departed.
For a player courted by Inter and admired across Serie A, that kind of attention from a coach with Alonso’s recent track record at Bayer Leverkusen carries weight. He trusted young talent there; he intends to do the same in London.
Chelsea, under the BlueCo ownership, have once again shown their willingness to outmuscle rivals in the market. This time, though, the move feels tightly aligned with the manager’s blueprint rather than a scattergun grab for the next big thing.
At 7:30am on June 24, Romano put it in the language Chelsea fans now know all too well: “Marco Palestra to Chelsea, here we go!” Inter’s advanced talks were suddenly irrelevant.
BlueCo look to Como – Ramon on the radar
Chelsea’s recruitment drive in Italy does not stop with Palestra.
Romano has also reported that the club’s hierarchy, BlueCo, have taken a serious interest in Jacobo Ramon, the Spanish centre-back who emerged as one of Como’s standout performers last season under Cesc Fabregas.
Ramon, 21, arrived at Como from Real Madrid in the summer of 2025 and grew into a defensive pillar, helping drive the club into next season’s Champions League. Strong, composed and comfortable in a possession-based system, he has the profile that fits neatly with Alonso’s preference for defenders who can both defend space and build play.
Chelsea have already opened lines of communication with Como. Initially, those talks centred on Trevoh Chalobah. The Italian club asked about a possible move for the Chelsea defender, but, as Romano explained, Chalobah’s price tag currently sits beyond their reach.
Chelsea flipped the conversation.
According to Romano, Chelsea then asked about Ramon, who is on a shortlist of “four or five” centre-backs under consideration. He is not the only option, but he is firmly on the list and being actively tracked.
There is, however, a twist. Ramon’s situation is complicated by Real Madrid’s continued involvement. Los Blancos still control 50% of his rights and hold a buy-back clause, a structure that gives them leverage over any future move and ensures any negotiation will involve more than just Como and Chelsea.
That co-ownership and buy-back safety net reflects how highly Madrid still rate the defender. It also raises the stakes for any club attempting to prise him away.
A clear defensive blueprint
Look at the pattern and a picture emerges.
Palestra, capable on both flanks and physically suited to the Premier League. Ramon, a modern centre-back thriving under a possession-focused coach. Both 21. Both already tested in Serie A. Both targeted with Alonso’s ideas in mind.
Chelsea are not simply collecting prospects; they are arming a new manager with the kind of flexible, aggressive defenders he has shown he can elevate.
Palestra is done, verbally agreed and waiting to be finalised. Ramon is being watched, discussed, weighed up against other names on that centre-back list.
If Chelsea decide to push, they will have to navigate Como’s ambitions and Real Madrid’s clauses. But with Alonso already shaping the squad and BlueCo willing to back their man, the question is no longer whether Chelsea will rebuild their defence.
It is which young defender becomes the next piece in Alonso’s back line.
