Chelsea set to sign Marco Palestra from Atalanta
Marco Palestra is on the brink of becoming Chelsea’s latest big-money signing, with the Italy international in London today to complete his medical ahead of a long-term move from Atalanta.
The right-back flew into the capital on Thursday, and his camp has been locked in talks to finalise the last contractual details. Barring late drama, he is expected to sign for Chelsea before the day is out.
Chelsea outmuscle Inter
This was a straight show of financial strength. Inter pushed hard for Palestra and put a salary worth around €2.5m per season on the table. Chelsea simply doubled it.
The 23-year-old is set to earn €5m net per year at Stamford Bridge on a six-year contract, with an option for a seventh season. It is the kind of long, lucrative deal that has become a hallmark of Chelsea’s recent recruitment drive, spreading the cost while tying down a player they believe can anchor the right flank for years.
Inter could not get close. Once Chelsea’s offer arrived, the race was effectively over.
The numbers behind the deal
There is still a slight discrepancy over the exact figures, but the scale of the move is clear.
British transfer analyst Ben Jacobs describes the fee as “in excess of €50m.” In Italy, Sky Sport Italia report a package worth €57m fixed plus a further €3m in bonuses.
Whichever version proves accurate, Atalanta are staring at one of the most lucrative sales in their recent history.
The Bergamo club have also negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause, giving them a slice of any future transfer fee if Palestra moves on from Chelsea. For a club that has built its modern success on developing and trading talent at the right moment, it is another shrewd piece of business.
From Pisa to the Premier League
Palestra’s rise has been steady rather than explosive. The image of him in Cagliari colours at the Arena Garibaldi in Pisa back in March 2026 tells its own story: a young full-back learning his trade in Serie A, building a reputation on consistency and athleticism.
That groundwork has now carried him to one of the most demanding stages in world football. Chelsea are betting heavily that his blend of energy, defensive discipline and attacking ambition will translate to the Premier League’s pace and physicality.
Atalanta, for their part, walk away with a major fee, a healthy add-on structure and the knowledge that another of their exports is about to test himself at the very top. Chelsea walk in expecting that this is not just another signing, but their right-back for the next era.
