Colby Edge Bowdoin in NESCAC Opener with Second-Half Goal

Brunswick, Maine – One moment of precision was enough.

Colby opened its season with a 1–0 road win at Bowdoin on Friday night, riding a sharp second‑half goal and a commanding shot advantage to start NESCAC play on the front foot. The Mules move to 1-0-0 overall and in the league, while the Polar Bears drop to 0-1-0 (0-1-0 NESCAC).

Colby Set the Tone Early

From the opening whistle, Colby dictated the tempo at Pickard Field. The Mules pinned Bowdoin deep, moving the ball crisply and turning pressure into chances. By halftime, the numbers told the story: Colby outshot Bowdoin 15–1 in the first 45 minutes.

Only one thing kept the visitors from running away with it early — senior goalkeeper Ilana Posner.

Making her first start for the Polar Bears, Posner turned the opening half into a personal statement. She registered five saves before the break, cutting out low drives, punching away crosses, and refusing to be beaten despite the constant traffic in front of her.

In the 55th minute, Colby finally carved Bowdoin open. Ella Caraluzzi surged down the left flank, exploiting space and driving toward the byline. Her low, centered ball picked out Abagail Jarvi in front, and Jarvi did the rest, steering her finish into the back of the net for the night’s only goal.

Bowdoin Responds, Gardner Holds Firm

Conceding sparked Bowdoin into life. The Polar Bears pushed higher, pressed more aggressively, and began to ask questions of the Colby back line for the first sustained spell of the night.

They forced the Mules to defend deeper and earned a 3–2 edge in corner kicks over the 90 minutes, a small but telling sign of their late territorial improvement. But when Bowdoin did break through, they met another roadblock: Colby goalkeeper Sadie Gardner.

Gardner handled everything that came her way, preserving the clean sheet as Bowdoin searched for an equalizer that never arrived.

Posner, though, was the standout figure for Bowdoin. In her debut start, she piled up a career‑high nine saves, keeping the Polar Bears within touching distance until the final whistle.
