Inter Milan defender John Stones has been officially ruled out with a thigh injury, a significant blow to England’s defensive stability and leadership. His club team-mate Djed Spence has also battled fitness issues, as has Dan Burn, leaving Tuchel short of established options at the back.

Then there is Harry Maguire. The centre-back, who admitted he was “shocked and gutted” to miss out on the World Cup squad, is not expected to be recalled.
